Title: stupid question regarding ATF fluid in the torque converter...
Post by: sb001 on 05 November 2019, 02:08
i recently had my engine out and then got busy with other things for about 3 months. I finally reinstalled the TC and engine yesterday, but forgot to refill the TC with ATF fluid before reinstalling (I turned the TC upside down when I pulled it and drained some of the ATF fluid out-- there's of course still some in there as it's pretty much impossible to drain it completely without a siphon, but the level is definitely lower than it's supposed to be.)
So my question is, is it safe enough to just refill the tank with ATF while running the engine until enough of the new fluid has been pumped into and through the TC? Or will not having refilled it outside the car cause damage if I try to do this?
Thanks

To add on to my previous post, after reinstalling the TC I spun it around on the input shaft splines to make sure it was fully seated, and it is but it made a very noticeable "grumbly" sound when I spun it. Is this simply because I have not refiilled the system with ATF yet, or is there another problem? TBH it almost sounded like it was rubbing against the bell housing, but it spun freely so I have no clue. Thanks for everyone's help!

Sb,
You have to fix both the outer shell and internal impellor to prevent a certain amount of "touching" as they are fairly close machined. So, onto the first q. Yeah - just keep your ATF topped up. Check it regularly. With a half or less full converter - expect aeration and subsequent "bleeding" off of air bubbles for a while at least.

You cannot really refill the ATF Tank with the engine running, as it will come out once You take the cap off.... Needs to refilled with the dipstick out....
I hope You lubricated the TC Seal with some ATF....  Once all assembled the Torque converter should be OK... once it has ATF in it to lubricate it etc....
Best of luck
