I'm beginning to understand the '69 AS I recently bought.  It's a beautiful car with a strong, modified engine with only one real problem, the clutch slips under load (hard acceleration going uphill, starting in high gear on a hill, etc).  My first thought was I need a new clutch.  In the process of trying to understand what that required I dug into the car and find the previous owner had a bus restoration shop rebuild the engine for more performance.  This included going to 1600 cc's, different cam, new carb,  new distributor with electronic control module.  I'm thinking they achieved more HP but may have compromised compatibility with AS.

The carb is an EMPI 30 P-1 with a single vacuum port.  That single vacuum port has a "T" and provides vacuum to both the distributor and the AS control unit.  I don't know much, but that doesn't seem right to me.  If it's not, what is my best solution? (replace carb, add second vacuum port to current carb, replace distrubutor, ??).

I believe the distributor is also an EMPI 009 with an electronic control module installed.

My goal is drivability and smooth AS operation.  I'm willing to do what's necessary to make that happen.  And if I need a new clutch I'll face that challange when I'm sure everything else is correct.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

             Date of manufacture is all. AB - early 1300cc twin port, AR made later. Your Bolt on's may be different - i.e. Carb, Distributor etc. May as well check whether you got the twin heat riser manifold in your '74.

Have You found the problem as yet????  it is probably something simple like a wire terminal has come loose ..
as I rewired My Beetle My self I cannot help You with any colors or where the wires go etc.... I have twice as many wires, maybe triple the number of wires in a Beetle.  I still haven't connected some things up, like the windscreen washer with electric pump.... etc...

Had My 2nd injection of Astro .. maybe I'll need another injection of Pizer later on..???  but all good here in the Country of NSW... in the Horse capital of Australia.... Driving My autostick nearly daily now.... just put new tires on the rear as the old ones had a crack around near the rim.... it wasn't going flat and wasn't worn out.... just for safety.... Our annual migration to a very large VW gathering about 300klms away has been put back to September. Whether it happens at all... any one's guess... If everyone did the correct thing.... and staying put in lock downs in the Cities... everything would be fine...  So stay safe everyone.... replaced all the rear brakes... and front brake pads... I bought a new brake master cylinder but I didn't need it.. I had just never ever tightened the two bolts  that hold it in place....  ??

My 74 autostick has a engine with engine code starts with AR, my 73 has a AB engine, what is the difference of these engines?

Going well here, had second injection, whole family luckely didnt have any covid problems.
Its summer here in the Netherlands, and made many kilometers with my autostick, enyoing the weather

Update - there was power at the fuse but none at the control valve - I replaced the fuse even though it appeared good and re seated all the connections on the appropriate fuse holder and it works. Problem solved.

I realize I had no replies to this post but it was the old posts and knowledge shared that helped me out. 

If anyone is interested in a 73 ghia Conv autostick let me know - I may have garage space issues at the end of the summer
