I'm looking behind the left side of the fan shroud, on my 72 engine, because that's where the doghouse cooler is located.  I can see the cooling fins of the oil cooler.  Am I missing some sheet metal here, and how bad does it affect cooling?  Where can I get these parts?

Thanks

Hiya old,

There are two pieces which direct air after it has passed through the oil cooler.  They are pieces 17 and 20 in the diagram (link) below.

They are probably available as aftermarket, but I'd go after the original German pieces in a boneyard.

And be sure to check that you have the "Hoover Bit" which is a small piece of tin that serves to seal the bottom edge of your oil cooler.  Without it you may run hot.  Unfortunately, the diagram above does not include a picture of the Hoover Bit

the hot air, exiting the oil cooler will be drawn in by the engine cooling fan..
its supposed to exit thru the front tinware plate...

Here is a photo of the Bob Hoover piece...

Hiya Lee,

If I recall correctly, didn't I see a picture of your engine set up without the post oil cooler tin ware?

Hi Mike,
I don't think I took any pics of My original engine with red tinware
and yellow generator backing plate... ???
I still have the red non doghouse fan housing hanging on the wall..

My Son mentioned to Me recently, that He has terrible trouble
fitting the engine with the doghouse oil cooler parts fitted...
I told Him I always put those parts on after engine installation...
and they are always the first parts I take off if taking the engine out..

Another thing I did last time i had the engine out....
I didn't use the Bob Hoover piece...
but I used thick foam glued around the bottom of the oil cooler..
I also have foam on top and on the flat sides of the oil cooler  too..
so no air should leak....
