Well that lot took me 4 years to do and now its been a year since it was finished we have made the
most of it this year driving to Germany twice the first time we went to bad camberg and then back to
Belgium for the first european bug-in were we took it down the strip a couple of times and the second
time we went to Germany it was the international VW bus meeting at the Hanover factory
the bus never missed a beat but the gear box has a slight leak so I'll keep my eye on that
its a type 3 box with a 1600 engine and a baywindow shifter any way i hope you like the pics

it would be cool to get in ultra vw ive met Keith Seume down in Cornwall he's normally at the
the cornwall vw owners show. We won spirit of the show there a few years ago and he gave me a trophy but that was when we were in the bay though before we had the spiltty.

My Son is restoring a split window Kombi [type 2]
I think its a 1959?? model..
He's making it into a camper..
I take it that is an ATF oil cooler with the metal cage around it
and hoses going to it..?

We didn't have sambas in Australia
and in 1964 the engine air vents were moved upwards where the last windows in Your van is
so no extra windows down here... the vents also protruded outwards...
this was an Australian modification... because of dust damage to engines...

Thanks im glad you like my old bus i haven't been too far in it this year, it seems to have developed an annoying AFT leak from the torque converter seal so its going to need the engine out again which is more difficult than it should be there's a lot more to get in the way of those top two engine to gear box bolts :-\ I'll get round to it eventually
your sons working on a 59 bus, very nice ribbed bumpers and bullet indicter's then 8)
The oil cooler and scoop under the bus is for the engine there's also a fan on top to suck air through when stud in traffic or on very hot days as any thing over about 50 mph and the air just rushes past the original vents on the bus, they were OK for the original 1200 engine's with lower speeds and cooler running, my 1600 engine keeps nice and cool even on hot days now
i don't know if it would work for your sons bus with the dusty roads it may just need the cooler cleaning now and again or some sort of a filter making up ?

He's getting the bumpers repaired
and has some bullet blinkers etc..
He's going to have pop out windows all round
and safari windows at the front...
and an 1835cc engine with twin webers..
He's thinking of using a late beetle gearbox
the leaking ATF from a torque converter seal...
is something We all dread...
thats why We change the seals so often... lol

Well done Phil-we chatted a few years back about your conversion-I did one in my Oval with a 2.7lt Type4 bolted up to it.Did you take any pics of how you modified the original lower mount that bolts to the frame horns?It's a bit hard to see because your deep sump obscures the mount.You certainly have done a top job on the body work.Well done again,a very unique ride-Cheers Gary.

we have parked it in shopping centres but i didnt leave it, my wife
went in for the shopping and i kept gard ;D
Tell your son to take it one step at a time and walk away when the jobs not
going well, busses are big things and can take a long time to finish
it will be worth it in the end

With many beetles over here, there can be none or a small amount of rust..
but the split window kombis and transporters that are being found now
have a similar rust problem to what You have over there...
I suppose its because most were used as workhorses over here
and usually left in the open when they were discarded...
OK on keeping Guard...
I hope You have an alarm fitted...
and a fuel cutoff switch etc...
battery switch... lol
I'm OK with My beetle in the country
but I dread going to the large cities... lol
and I don't know if i could cope in Sydney... lol
and the shopping center carparks...
a shopping trolley can do a lot of damage...
so, can people who don't care what their doors hit...

Hi Gary sorry for not getting back to you ive been having problem logging on
but i think ive sorted it now
All i did is remove the rubber engine mounts as the gear box's weight is hanging from above
as in a type 3, i modifed the type 3 top gear box mounts to reach back to hang from the petrol
tank shelf
The front gear box mount was modified to move the gear box as far forward as we could as the
gear box is aprox 2 inches longer than a manual box
The engine has an engine bar to take the weight of the engine made from a late baywindow bus
bar chopped and modifed to reach forward as the engine is pushed back due to the length of the
gear box, it hangs on type 3 engine mounts from the buses rear bumper brackets so no extra holes
in the body so all in all the original gear box mount has no weight on it just touches the bottom
of the box as a fail safe
but i was chatting to an old american guy in the beer tent at bad camberg who really knew his stuff
he had done this conversion a couple of times for his costumers and he told me that the gear box
from a auto type 25 will also fit and will take more power

Thanks Phil-I'm on to it now-can figure out what you did.Have you got the engine sealing properly on the original rubber seal?I can't remember what the Type 3's used for an engine support at the bellhousing-thought it was just at the front and the wide bar across the rear.I have bought another Type 3 auto as well as one from an 1800 Bus-trying to decide which one to use in my Drag car.Will probably use the Bus one with the lower diff ratio and use the Type 3 for a Splitty conversion.Looks like doing a Splitty will be a lot easier than what I had to do in my Oval.I will have to find out what a Type 25 is.Cheers Gary.

The engine seals fine i had to weld a 30 mm lip
on the top rear tin to fill the gap between it and
the petrol tank shelf

just a quick up date with the auto samba it's not for the stock vw fans but it wasnt stock before, i dont do stock any way i cant help tinkering with things but before any one gives me greaf ive done all the work to it so every thing can be returned to stock every thing can just bolt on or off
after doing a similar thing to my t25 [vanagon] which transformed it i took the plunge and got a cheap 2lt subaru legacy off ebay i hadnt got big bucks for a performance aircooled motor and im getting too old to be under it all the time i just want to be able to jump in and be off with no worries, so hope fully it will be worth it when it's done just a bit of fine tuning now and it will be ready for the summer any way it's still an auto ;D

thanks mate the convertable as been sat in the garage unloved for a couple of years no so im determined to get back on with it this summer and thats stopping aircooled, then finally i will have all my vdubs working at once it's only took me 10 years :-[
