Title: Rubbing when accelerating.
Post by: TheZooniverse on 30 April 2010, 21:54
Hey guys, I been drivin my '68 alot recently and noticed a sort of rubbing effect when i accelerate, coming from what feels like the floors and rear, every time i step on the gas i can feel something rubbing, and a sort of rub/grind noise. but once i release the gas, it stops completely. it only happens when i accelerate.

At first i thought it was the Fan shroud and had the car in neutral and tried to push the shroud back and forth, but i never felt or heard the fan hit in the inside of the shroud, it was also starting/running rough for alittle bit, but a valve adjustment cleared up the rough start/idling for the most part, i hoped it'd solve my issue, but sadly it didn't.

I don't know what it could be.

Help Please.

Hiya Zoo,

Does the noise seem to be rotational in nature?

Yes it is. Sometimes i also have felt it when i cut the wheel to the right. but it sounds/feels like it's coming from the rear though.

Hiya Zoo,

Hmmmmm....my first guess would be a CV joint.  You might want to get your Bug out in a large flat parking lot.  Then, in Low, going about 10 mph, make a series of sharp left and right turns.  See if you get any noise during those turns.  This would be typical of a CV joint.

It's possible that you also might have a brake backing plate rubbing against a drum.

Hi Guys...
it could be a lose or worn handbrake pin or brake shoe pin clip or circlip
these may be just floating about...

it also could be a CV Joint.. 2 on either side...
these need to be cleaned, dryed, and then repacked fully with lithium based MOLY grease..
these cv joints only go back together one way...
they can go back together incorrectly...
which then makes its VERY difficult to unassemble....  take pics.. lol

the lithium based Moly grease will stop any noise etc in the CV JOINTs...

if they are badly worn they should be renewed...
but the  grease will keep them going for a long time..
lithium based MOLY Grease is that good....!!!!!!!!!!!
