have a '71 super autostick-- i know this has been answered before, certainly more than once, I've read the majority of the posts... driving over some heavy mountain terrain my bug was dying a slow death until it finally died, popped open the hood and the points had closed-- to 0.0 so i set them to .016-- i know i needed to adjust the timing but at least it might get me home. started it back up but couldn't go into gear, shifter would move in neutral but no matter what gear i tried to get in i got a grinding noise.... went back to look at the engine:
there are two wires that run to the bottom side of the servo's inline fuse. both were frayed, cracked one snapped in half when i touched it! with a pocket knife i did a quick splice job and figured i would replace the wires when i got home. opened up the inline fuse "canister" checked the fuse, and it looked fine. put the canister back together, still would not get into gear.
what ended up doing the trick?
the canister has a sliding lock, after it locks the top and bottom separate just a hair. the only way i could shift was to pinch the canister together while my girlfriend put the car in gear-- consequently no shifting once back on the highway-- now that i have it home i can't get it to go into any gear at all-- has anyone had any issues with the actual inline fuse holder (not the fuse)? or is this something else?
Yes. The spring inside the fuse holder is too compressed. Just take it apart an gently stretch the spring so that it is a little longer. That should do the trick.

hard wired through the fuse and still couldn't get it going so got underneath the car-- turned out the arm to the clutch servo had worked itself off, put it back on, readjusted, and i'm rolling! thanks for the help. haven't had my autostick w/ me for the past two years, but now that i got it shipped out here i'll be on much more, always sort of watched this forum from afar- but hope to contribute much more in the months to come.
Fss,

Bit of a worry..clutch arm or the little servo arm?

sorry, servo arm. yes.
I have had the servo adjuster come undone on Me a few times..
mainly because i never tightened the locknut as i only have two hands..
I'm sure You need three hands to tighten that locknut..lol
and only room for one hand... lol
