Title: Oil Pump Seals fitting - very confused!
Post by: Airhead on 29 May 2010, 20:26
Im replacing the 2 black seals that go inside the oil pump, thought I may as well while my engine is out.

The seals just dont seem to fit at all Ive tried forcing them in but dont want to end up totallty distoring them. Ive noticed on Mikes post about the oil pump internals that the hole where the 2 seals go on Mikes picture looks like it goes straight through, whereas on mine it seems to have a metal collar inside this seems to be stopping the seals from going in - what is it should I somehow try to remove it?

This is Mikes picture (thanks Mike!) Ive highlighted the hole in question:

This is mine showing the hole with the collar inside  ??? ???

Any ideas?

Steve,
Yes. You had the original steel cased seals. You got the rubber portion out, leaving the shell behind.
The new seals (I presume from TCM or EVW) are just rubber (okay..nitrile) without the steel casing.

You have knock the two casings out. Find where there appears to be a lip and with a punch knock it out, from the opposite side.

Those seals are back to back, like this (sort of) :  ][  .

Man!

Is Sean good or what?

I looked at that picture of the dividing plate and just scratched my head trying to figure out what was going on there.  Ol' Sean knew the score allright.

Nice call there Sean.

I learn something new every day.  Thanks for that one Sean.

Thanks Sean those seals were driving me crazy trying to get those in, I even started to think the seals were too big!

The seals I took out weren't exactly back to back though, if you look at the dividing plate where the seals go on one side it has a long
shaft on that side the seal was ] (with the spring side facing outwards), on the other side of the plate the other seal was [
(with the spring side facing in towards the other seal so like (spring out ]] spring in)

Cheers

Steve

Steve,
Really?? Like this ]]??. I would call that incorrectly installed. You've got two sides that can go to 50psi so you would choose the path of greatest sealing. IIRC those seals are twin lipped. I would have the lips installed in opposite directions to ensure the best seal, from either side. If it winds up like ][ or [], I would rather have that than ]] or [[. I've got three pumps and they were all ][, and all steel cased original seals.

Mike, I remember only too clearly the "WTF??" moment I had when I got faced with the same thing on the first pump I pulled apart. Second nature now ;).

Hiya Sean,

Ah yes, experience speaks!

You know, in all the AS oil pumps I've pulled apart (and that's a bunch of 'em) I've never seen that.  Nor did I know that the original seals had a metal carrier.

Education.  Ain't it wonderful?
