Title: torque converter seal
Post by: 72 super|vert|stick on 20 July 2010, 02:04
Hello fellow VWAR's,

I have a question regarding the seal that I got from CIP1 (VWC-001-301-083-B). The image on the website shows an orange seal. The one I received was a black seal. The one I'm replacing is an orange seal. I have eyeballed it and seems fine but seems strange that it has changed. Has anyone seen this? If the center diameter is the same would it work?

Hiya Chris,

Before even addressing the color differences in the seals, do be aware of this.............

VW changed the design of the torque converter seal midway through the 1970 production year.  Essentially, this redesign merely moved the shape retaining spring from one side of the seal to the other.  Folks here at VWAR (I'm thinking of Lee right now) have reported the use of the "wrong" seal without any complications.  It seems as if either seal may work in any application.  No absolute "cast in stone" conclusions on this issue, but it seems as if this might be a "one seal fits all" situation.

I have a little collection of torque converter seals.  Both orange and black rubber seals.  For example, right now I'm looking at two 001 301 083B seals.  One is orange, one is black.  The metal body is also looks to be different on each seal, so I'm guessing that these differences are just chalked up to different suppliers.

Thanks Mike,
I thought it was the same by the generic looks of it, other than the color. I thought I remember seeing Lee's post about it but wasn't sure. I'm putting it all back in the car on Sunday.

Thanks for the confirmation.

Hi Guys,

Yes, although the ones I've seen have been different , they all seem to fit the same
the one in My current gearbox, looked new , but it was different again, maybe NOT a genuine seal??
or a non genuine old new seal ??  I did replace it anyway...
I found the later seal was actually slightly smaller in the ID than the early ones...
that is VERY slightly..  measured with calipers...

cheers

LEE

PS: as the moment.. I'm replacing My original fusebox with a new NON VW one with the late type of fuses.
and as I guessed... I seem to have a lot of spare wires...lol
and a few things aren't working... lol  [naturally]
