Title: troubles with servo adjustment
Post by: 72 super|vert|stick on 14 August 2010, 21:56
Can someone help me with my adjustment of my servo? I have tried the 5.5 turns from the clutch arm side and still no reverse. I can get it into low gear and D1 AND D2 work all the time. I've jacked up the car and had my wife turn the key and seen the servo engage. It holds vacuum when I block off the port. I dazed and confused with this thing. I have also searched the forums and not see the answer and hope this isn't a repeat topic. Can someone help me fine tune this beast! Help is greatly appreciated as this is the final step in driving her down the street. ;D

Hiya Chris,

Let me offer this...............

If you can cleanly shift into Low, First, and Second ranges, you should (all thing being as they should be) be able to shift into Reverse also.

I would suggest that you take a close look at your shift coupler.  It needs to be transferring the exact movements (forward, backward, and laterally) from your shift rod to the transmission's "Hockey stick".  There should be no loss of movement and no slop in the action of the shift coupler.

Remember too that as you press down on the shift lever knob to get into Reverse you should see movement at the shift coupler.  If you do not, you may have front shift rod bushing problem as well.

Mike,
I've had it shifting into reverse recently, but I thought it needed more adjustment and now I can't find that spot again. Does rotating the turnbuckle either way make the clutch work more or less? Sounds like a stupid question but still trying to get my bearings with it. With the 5.5 turns is a normal adjustment it would seem that the turnbuckle is closer to the clutch arm then the servo. Would one way be all clutch and the other grind the gears? I know i'm being a PITA but I'm really struggling with this.

Thanks for all of your help
Chris

Hi Chris,

Yes, screwing the adjuster tighter [for want of another word] will bring the clutch in sooner...
so, I always adjust until I can get into reverse without crunching...
then.. 1/4 turn more...

and You shouldn't have any problems...

Mike, I've found reverse is the Hard One...lol
I used to be able to get all the other gears...
but crunched every time in reverse...

I think I still need an extra 1/4 turn ...
as I can still crunch reverse if shifting too fast...
and it still crunches from Low to Drive One if shifting too Fast..

shifting slowly.. no problems...  points have been adjusted...
Maybe the control valve is too slow???

PS: I could never get anything to work using the book etc instructions..  Lee
as once the clutch lever has been off....??

Thanks Lee,
Do you know which way does what? Is the Servo side the clutch or grind? Again so many attempts made me more confused and this would help with know which way is doing what.

Again Thanks

I found out that my gear shift selector was causing most of the issue. I reset it and It seems to be working much better. Still some fine tuning such as the clutch is taking to long to disengage, again fine tuning and away I go for the first time in 4 years.  ;D

Thanks for being there when we need it!

This sounds like it might be a tweaking of the control valve adjust screw kinda fix.

Thanks Mike,
That is what I was going to do. It's funny how the Ah-ha moments come. All my adjustments on the turnbuckle didn't seem to make a difference with the reverse. Can't tell you how many attempts I made to get it into reverse, then finally I got a semi good contact and it hit me. So I cleaned the contacts and reset the gap on the selector and ready to dial in the control valve. Always learning....

Thanks to all

Chris

Hi Guys,

Well, My shifter rod points adjuster was loose for many months..
and causing problems which I fixed by turning the gearshifter clockwise ..lol
but My wife was going to drive the car one day..
so, I fixed it and tightened it up...
no more problems..

apart from a crunch if going from Low to Drive 1 and changing fast...
doesn't do it when changing "normally"
but I got into the habit of going from LOW to Drive 2..
