I am Hakan from Turkey and working for the central bank of Turkey.
I have AS super beetle (1974) since last april and I love it.
When I first got it the gears were not changing easily as they are grinding.
But after finding a good mechanic and changing the vacuum hoses everytihing is fine now.
the upshifting and downshifting is good. but there is some free play on the shift lever.
I will post the pictures of my beetle soon.
Nice too see this much people dealing with AS beetle, as people belives here that it is a hard task to manage it :)

Yes,
most mechanics don't want to know about them....
same in Australia....
there shouldn't be a lot of play in the gearshifter....
the nylon/plastic bush under the gear shifter may need replacing...
also the lock out plate under the gear shifter may need renewing??
but if it goes OK and You can select the gears ...
just drive it... lol ;D ;D

There is the biggest community at the capital city Ankara about 250 beetles of which 2 of them are A/S.
İstanbul and Bursa Cities has also big communities for beetles and buses.
I think my free play is because of the plastic thing under the shift lever, but as you said it is OK right now and can drive it easily.
In the revision I will handle it.
But I think the previous owners did not thought about the maintanance issues so I want to change its replacable parts if necessary.
What do you think?
1. What parts should be obtained and changed for a better performance of transmission. seals, bolts etc. Or should we leave it untill it makes a problem :)
2. should we change the air filter on the control valve or should we just clean it?
3. these cars are good at low inclined roads but when the road is steep it does not show that much good performance. I am thinking a electronic ignition for my bug, does it make a difference at steep roads and does it worth its price?

I restored and overhauled My beetle over 10 years...
when first back on the road , it was like what You are saying..
not good up steep grades/hills...
and used a lot of petrol/gasoline.
I have changed things and kept it tuned up etc...
I fitted a HIGH ENERGY ignition system which did make a difference...
but the BEST thing I did was replace My 009 distributor..
with a Bosch SVDA distributor with vacuum and mechanical advance
just like the original distributor..
I also have the electronic ignition to replace the points in the distributor {PERTRONIX]
I also adjust the tappets at every oil change [1000KLM}
so My engine is working as well as it can...
I can now accelerate to 100KMH at any time on the highways
and have no problems going up inclines.
I have had problems using Ethanol Gasoline/Petrol..
My engine does Not like Ethanol fuel.... it loses Horse Power {Kilowatts]
and does not go up inclines - Hills at 100KMH... but at 55KMH... ??
so, I do not use Fuel with Ethanol....
the air filter on the control valve can be washed clean... [YES]
The electronic Pertronix ignition does not make any ?? difference to engine performance.. [NO]
the Vacuum hoses [12mm ] should be replaced with a GOOD Quality Hose that will NOT collapse
with the vacuum.. These are the main causes of Problems...
Do You know how to tune Your Engine????

By the way your car is very nice and its motor is the most colorful motor I have ever seen.
I want to spent some money on my bug too, but I am always afraid of a break down in the transmission system (although its healthy now)
I want to repaint it, spent some money to the interior design and do some modification on the motor.
My bug is 1300 cc by the way, this may be the reason for its unadequate performance on steep hills.

it may be the 1300 engine... with large hills or inclines..
people used to put 14 inch wheels on beetles in Australia years ago to make them go quicker up hills ....
they would probably go to 90 KMH... ??
I saw a photo of one with 13 inch wheels recently...
the wheels looked very small...
but it went good up to about 80KMH... lol
the Gearboxes are Very strong... No need to worry...
Make sure the gearbox is full of hypoid oil... like Castrol 75-90 hypoid oil..
I use an oil additive in the gearbox...
Molybond or similar... to stop wear...
the clutch plate lasts a very long time as it is either IN or OUT... No Slippage...
There are many used parts in the USA...

Unfortunately I cannot tune it myself right now, but I want to do it myself :) after obtaining the necessary info and experience.
Do you have suggestions for that?

Hi again,
the vacuum is caused by the engine [when its going] as air & fuel is sucked into the carburetor.
so, the 009 distributor is only good for high revving , powerful engines for racing etc..
as it has to wait for the engine to REV so it can advance the electrical timing of the spark.. [mechanical advance]
Now the Single Vacuum Dual Advance Distributor has both Vacuum and Mechanical advance.. SVDA
and as soon as You touch/press the accelerator pedal...
vacuum advances the spark in the distributor so the engine goes BETTER...
then as the engine revs... the mechanical part of the distributor takes over.... EXCELLENT...

You may be able to read all the numbers on Your Distributor...
Does it have a round vacuum can on it??
does it have a pipe going to the carburetor from the distributor..

Yes You have a SVDA distributor..
but I need the Bosch numbers off the distributor...
like 113 905 205AH [this could be the wrong number as its from memory lol]
but it will have 9 numbers and 1 or 2 letters at the end...
this is the VW number...
it will also have Bosch numbers... or letters...

vw 043 905 205 A
the other number on it is 0 231 170 036
my motor number is AR 06 38 36
therefore can you help me determining which of the electronic ignition kits of the pertronix fits to my distributor?
