Title: Hello all
Post by: scoobydoo on 04 December 2011, 13:22
Hey guys Just thought i would introduce myself. My name is Roger and we just picked up a 1972 semi auto beetle, We love it !  ;D ;D At the moment the engine is not in the car and needs rebuilding.
The previous owner told me that the engine had seized due to the rocker cover coming off while she was driving , but when i stripped the engine down i found strange things in one of the barrels  (will try to upload pics ,the screws and stuff in my hand were in the barrels :o) The seizure seems to bee in the case so will need to open it up and do further investigation.

I would guess sabotage!  None of that junk would end up in the cylinders by itself, especially the wood screw! Are the cylinder walls scored up?  The rest of the car looks pretty nice.  Best of luck to you, friend.

Thanks for the reply Johnr, yes the cylinders are scored up but i  will be replacing them. I managed to split the case today and found that the middle bearing was seized , so i am going to regrind the crankshaft and replace all the bearings.....

I have a question the cars engine is a 1300 but i was thinking of changing it to 1600 , do you think this will be too much for the transmission ?

Take care

Thanks

I've had mine a while now, I think just over two years now. It finally passed an MOT test about a month ago but still has a long way to go before it looks respectable. One of these days I'll get round to updating my thread on here...

I hope you've taken plenty of photos!

No, I don't think so.  I had the 1600's installed in my engine and they work fine.

Hi Johnr

We still haven't had any rear summer as yet... athough it was 40C today in Perth on the West coast..
but only 28C here today... its been trying to rain the past few days , so its been very high humidity
which I find hard to take...  OK in front of a fan.. lol  or Air Conditioning on..
I don't know whether We will get any temperatures over 36c this summer...
although sometimes February can be a Very Hot Month....
after that it should be all downhill... lol

cheers

LEE

PS: A lot of flooding on the eastern side of Australia the past months... again yesterday... heavy Rains..
not Here though..

Flooding here too!  Our beloved Coquille river,  home of the elusive salmon,  has
been rising above it's bounderies!

Yes John
There have been many flooded towns in Australia this year and some rivers etc have been the highest ever recorded..  Some cities have had flash flooding from very heavy rain..  The high temperatures have still stayed somewhere else??  33C is the highest temperatures so far..  First time I've been able to work on My VW parts out in the sunshine in summer.. I'm painting My tinware and fanshroud again... with a color change... I've found some excellent EPOXY spray can paint..
VERY glossy and smooth..  only downside is it can take about 6 hours to  dry..

cheers

Very good.  I painted mine with hi-temp engine enamel (Spray Cans).
It looks great,  but recently I spilled some gas and the paint melted away!
:'(

Hi John

Yes, that has happened to me at times too..
I don't know how long it takes the paint to cure...
sometimes its takes a long time and if its not hot enough or dry enough

a few years ago, I painted an external rear vision mirror on a car after a truck had smashed the other one off the car.
, I bought a can of the correct color auto paint, but it was winter..
and i must have sprayed it 6 times and it stayed dull... no shine...
that's when I realised that the temperatures [to use the paint] on the can of paint were correct.

I have just finished painting My engine fan shroud yellow with EPOXY spray paint
I have found it very glossy and hard wearing.  I had painted a steering wheel and the steering column near the ignition switch with it and so far, its very  hard wearing.
the EPOXY paint does take around 6 hours to dry... I usually leave it over night, and leave the parts in the sun for a few days for it to really harden..
I still wouldn't like to try gasoline on it though... lol...

I find that spray on degreaser that I use frequently can dull the paint badly..
and even take the paint off, when I spray the degreaser off with a bit of water pressure..
so, I may have to find a different degreaser.. maybe a truckwash..
but I'm hoping the EPOXY paint will last with no problems..

its strange that under My engine and gearbox were always oily when wiped with a paper cloth but
since I degreased under there a few months ago and then sprayed with white undercoat paint
it hasn't been greasy or oily etc since... the undercoat is dry all the time..??

cheers John

Lee in Australia  30C temperature  [maximum this summer  has been 33C but very high humidity]

I can't post pics on this laptop and cannot get into here at all on My normal computer..!!

Same here!  It really tries my patience.  I can't remember how many times I've
carefully handled dry but not really hard parts because I couldn't wait to reassemble
them and see how pretty they looked!

Yes John,
I remember when I was a kid, and paint went on with a brush..lol
it also took a long time to dry..
I can remember painting My push bike and couldn't wait to ride it..lol
it rained and the water stopped You sticking to the paint..

so, when I painted other bikes, I used to hose it down then...lol
so, My clothes wouldn't stick to the paint.. but the paint was still wet and soft, if You actually touched it with a bit of force... it still was the same as when it was wet... lol

the pressure pack paint I've been using, all sorts and brands they all dry in a  few minutes..
except this KILLRUST EPOXY paint which is 6 hours... respray after 16 hours..

I have the fan shroud, alternator, inlet manifold all just about bolted in..
no scratches yet.. but it is  a pain being so careful...

cheers

Lee

I prefer "Super Clean" to degreaser,  works pretty well and doesn't smell.
We've come a long ways from the "Gunk" days!  Also I'm taking Jay Leno's
advice and adding a bit of Marvel oil to my gas to counter the effects of the
ethanol our benevelent government is foisting on us.  I too remember brush painting my bicycle!
Title: Re: Hello all
Post by: 68autobug on 24 February 2012, 13:25
We can still buy non ethanol standard gas 91 octane at older gas stations

they were going to phase out this fuel 18 months ago but there wasn't enough ethanol
to add to the fuel... lol  so put it back 12 months...

the government was going to make this non ethanol expensive so no one would buy it
and try to force older cars off the road...but were beaten..

We can still buy 95 and 98 octane gas that has no ethanol in it..
Many european cars need the 98 octane to run properly..

but they are more expensive$$$  I only use 98 in My beetle...
goes terrible with ethanol... didin't realise that the new local gas stations only sold ethanol 91...

now they are saying NOT to put ethanol fuel in boat engines or lawn mowers etc...
and ALL government cars must use 98 octane [with no ethanol] ??

cheers

LEE

Sounds l ike your annointed ones are on the same IQ level with ours! I run mine on "plus" which is between regular and super.  I am sick to death of green this and that, etc.  Ethanol is good for drinking, PERIOD!!
