Title: AXLES
Post by: Porbest on 06 April 2012, 00:47
Does anyone know if replacement or rebuilt axles are available for the automatics? I have a 74 SB AS in need of axles. Are the AS axles different from the manual axles?

According to this the autostick and manual use the same axles.  I'm not sure, but the picture does look just like my autostick axles.

I believe that they are the same as superbeetle rear axles..
just wondering what happened to Your axles??
I thought they would last forever, although I do see a few VW parts shops that sell new ones
in Australia, We just replace the CV Joints..

cheers

Thanks Phil and Lee for the feedback.
I always thought they were the same but CIP1 said they were different???
Lee.. PO had four split boots which damaged the CV's. CIP has replacement axle assemblies for $100. For that price I will replace them.

Hi
the reason I say that, is I know of a few people in Australia who have changed an autostick into a manual car and have used the axles with CV joints in the manual cars without any problems .
At first I always thought they were different lengths, as they sit differently, between the gearbox and rear wheel hubs.
they seem to be more of an angle than the manual cars..  and one used to look longer than the other?? lol

Bad luck with the CV Joints, and Yes, We don't have prices like that over here for a full axle, otherwise everyone would be doing it..
lol..  CV Joints are expensive over here, especially the LOBRO brand that were the originals as used by VW.
I have seen cheaper ones about now, but haven;t heard anything about them.
I had CV boots last about a year or so which isn't long as I don't drive far in My beetle. they were cracked but not split right thru.
oddly enough when I bought them I got two with gold colored metal parts and two with silver colored metals
two were fine and still are... the other two silver ones were just about perished thru.. so were very old stock.. lol

Lots of chinese made parts about now, and many are just too badly made to use..  They can make parts look the same, but they don't seem to know about quality and a perfect fit or size..??  Its like they really have no idea what they are making..
but make it shiney, polished or chromed etc...  but its still no good if it doesn't fit...
problem is Brasilian Mexican and Chinese don't seem to stamp a brand on their parts.
Main problems I've heard from over here, are chinese carburetors and distributors...
The carburetors need to be disassembled and cleaned out...  and the Distributors thrown away..!!
also know of a chinese alternator that had no woodruff key groove to lock the pulley onto.. so cannot be used..!!

cheers

Hi.. I recommend You use Lithium based MOLY grease in the CV Joints and they will last just about forever.
This grease was recommended by VW for wheel bearings, front torsion bars etc..  it virtually stops wear altogether..
Normal grease is usually clay based and green colored.. YIKES... I only use that on My tappet cover gaskets... lol
