Hi Everyone, My name is Wayne and I am the proud new owner of a Royal Red '69 beetle autostick. The body is in great condition for a car this old and I only have to do a small patch under the car on the heater channel. Only problem is I got the car with the engine hanging out the back and all the wires disconnected. I pulled the engine and put all new gaskets in it and put the engine back in. I just got it running last week but I am trying to figure out where the wires are that go to the solenoid? I found two wires bundled together, coming out of the harness on the passenger side of the engine compartment one is brown and would pretty much reach to the solenoid and the other, black and has a spade connector on it just as it comes out of the harness plastic loom. Anyone have any idea?
thanks so much
Wayne
almost forgot the picture overload

Hi Wayne
I can't help with which colored wires as I rewired My beetle.
however the wire from the bottom of the gear shifter lever goes to the neutral
safety switch on the LHS nose of the gearbox to the solenoid..
the other connection is just to the coil + IGNITION Power
when its connected up correctly [doesn't matter which terminal has Power + or ground]
with the ignition ON engine Off , You should be able to hear the clutch servo working
when you change gears. There should be enough vacuum in the tank for about 5 - 8+
activations..[never really counted how many].
Best to read as many of the posts/threads on here regarding new vacuum hoses etc.
The original vacuum hoses are very old and can leak at any time, so I always recommend renewing them all so any problems can be picked up.. as a vacuum hose leak can cause all sorts of problems.. and cause adjustments to the clutch servo, gear shifter and solenoid which aren't necessary.
welcome to the world of Autosticks.. I'll look at the photos now..lol

thanks Lee. Really it doesnt matter which wire goes on where?ok Ill play with it today. I have new 12mm I bought from a place here called busdepot.com. I have been collecting autostick parts like a madman. I have 3 servos, one of which is new old stock. one spare transmission, an extra set of pedals, Here is an EXTRA clear image of the wiring that I found on the samba.

Well Wayne, a nice collection of pics there.. enjoyed looking at them..
I'll look and see which colored wires go where... there are 3 wires to the neutral safety switch..
two wires that go to the Low gear and second gear heat sensor for ATF automatic transmission fluid.
so that if the ATF over heats in 3rd gear [Drive 2] and the dash lamp comes on You need to change back to drive 1 and if the dash atf lamp came on in Drive 1 then its back to LOW gear..
They found out in 1971 models that they didn't need the sensor fro drive 1 as it never over heats..
so only one sensor was used from 1971... [I've never had My dash lights connected to the ATF Sensors.. Yet..
You car is a 1969 ,model as it has the cables to turn the heaters on the floor ON.. these were ONLY on 1969 beetles..
Car was in OK shape for where it was found... lol but still some rust to fix and stop any more rust..
the plastic padded dashes weren't liked in Australia and most were taken off... leaving a nicely painted dash..lol
so, they are hard to find..
I see You have been at work checking over the engine etc..
I have a couple of spare gearboxes and control valves and a torque converter. Hardest parts to get are the dual ATF Pump and the flex plate bolted to the engine... both these items can be left connected to the engine and sold...
so, they are the hardest to find parts...
cheers

Thanks Lee, I did forget to say that I had a spare control valve and a spare dual oil pump as well as I just bought a seized autostick engine even though everyone thought I was nuts, lol, just so I could get that pump :)
thanks for the diagrams, they are really going to help me.. I am going to work at it today for a bit. I would love to get it on the road before the cold hits. its great weather out now to work on it so I am taking advantage of it.!
regards,
Wayne
Hi Wayne
Yes i bought a complete setup without the engine.. and the engine still had the flexplate and dual pump on it...??
but I do have spares.. and You really can't have too many.
as I'm finding out now that many beetle parts are getting hard to find and the reproduction parts aren't much good. |Its hard to tell the good repro parts from the bad.. as many parts are no longer made in Germany or even Europe but China and India.. Luckily the autostick parts were made as good as they could be..
Did You replace the two seals in the dual pump? they sit back to back and are no available again... there were NLA years ago..
cheers

weatherwise We are going into Summer with a vengeance .. after one of the coldest days on record about a week ago.. its supposed to be 36C on saturday..
I hope they are wrong.. lol .. I rarely drive My beetle at 36C and over... LEE
I tested my solenoid out for the first time yesterday and it clicked, so that is good, although I cant really say much for my spare unfortunately. I tried for an hour with different ground points to get it to actuate but no luck. Do you know if there are rebuild kits for them?
I did not replace the oil pump seals, do you know the part numbers?
I wouldnt want to drive my beetle at 36C either, lol.... well, unless you had the A/C option :)
Hi
there are no kits for the control valve that I know of..
Your control valve maybe OK.. it may just be the solenoid..
so, You could still use the control valve part..
The pump dual seals are now available from evwparts.com
they were NLA for many years..
part number is: 113 115 219 pair of seals $19-95
they fit back to back.. oil pressure on one and ATF pressure on the other one
