Title: Torque converter interchangability
Post by: DrDarby on 26 October 2012, 16:48
I've got a customers '69 Beetle here that I thought the clutch was slipping badly. Removal shows a new clutch inside that doesn't look bad. I'm now suspecting the torque converter and have one here from a '73 Super. Will the '73 torque converter fit the '69 and do I need an early or late seal as I understand they are different.
Thanks

Doc,
The TC's are the same, it is the seal which VW (from memory) changed. They went from the black one to the red one. They look horribly different but both do the job. Fit the red seal and just give the surface of the TC snout where the seal rides a good eyeball. Lube up the seal lip with some ATF and don't forget to pein it on. Some of us here use PVC pipe lengths to drive the seal on before peining.

The black ones are now subject to scrounging from classifieds on various websites. Rapidly NLA!

Enjoy
