Re: She Quit
We were cruising to McDonalds, when she quit. Engine shutdown, without a sputter....... Now, turning the key to the start position, the engine remains silent, but the engine warning lights come on, and the turn signals will work
I have a hunch where the problem lies, but when a guy reaches a certain age, he wants to minimize trips "sliding under"........ What's your guess?

Hi Bill
Actually the same thing happened to Me driving out of McDonalds about 2 years ago at night.
what had happened, was the points had worn down [the rubbing block] so there was no gap at all. Also the plastic rubbing block had turned slightly, so the points were useless. I always carry spares so it didn't take long to replace them and time them.. I had to get My Son who lived locally to bring Me a flashlight.. [wasn't in My town] I always carry a flashlight now.. lol
I have since fitted electronic points replacement so no more points to wear down or adjust.
When the engine stops like that I always check the points and the wires on the coil and the carburetor etc.. to check if You have power to the coil, just get someone to move the gear lever [with the ignition on] and see if You can hear the control valve solenoid clicking.
I hope that helps.. also the idle cutoff solenoid on the carburetor will stop the engine too if the wire is diconnected.. You can pull it off and touch the wire to the terminal [ignition on] and You will also hear it click if its OK..
cheers
