Would it be possible to grab replacements out of regular metric stock at your local hardware/parts store?
Hey Mike, Unfortunatley the only 7mm they had was 1.0 thread pitch. The pan bolts are 1.25 pitch. I looked at a few bolt suppliers online and they didn't even list the bolt with the correct pitch. A google search revealed very little help and quite a bit of complaining about a honda that used the same bolt. The trans pan in the autostick is the only place this size is used on a vw that I can find. Arrrrggh

Wow! This falls under the "you learn something new each day" category. We had been discussing the pan bolts not too long ago. Traded pictures of them too. But I did not realize they had a unique thread pitch.
I've got a couple of ideas.................
An outfit like BelMetric that specializes in metric fasteners should (I would think) be able to cough up a suitable replacement.
An online VW salvage yard (think Way Out down in Arkansas) could round up the bolts for you from one of their junkers.
Do you need the one-only longer bolt also?
I'm not familiar with the longer bolt. Could you tell me where it goes and maybe even why? Thanks for the belmetric suggestion, they don't list a 7mm on the website at all but I'll call them today.

Wow that is a loooong bolt. Does anyone know it's purpose? By the way, the response from belmetric was "we have m7 x 1.00. But M7 x 1.25 good luck" I thought that was funny. The search continues.

I found an answer on STF once. It is used to lock in the pinion securing nut retaining clip. I don't know whether it's fitted to later years (that photo is from a '70 BA code trans). The long bolt is centre front on the trans (front=front of car).
M7 x 1.25......talk about manufacturer specific >:(
I'll whip those ones out again and measure the bolt head, wouldn't do to have an 10mm head on them as well!! Then they truly would be one of a kind...
Maybe you could consider Helicoiling back to a standard size and leaving the long bolt alone (if you have one)?

There's a fellow from Port Orchard, Washington who has six old AS transmissions he wants to get rid of. As in FREE. He currently has an ad over on the Samba....... http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=513449 I zapped an e-mail his way. He says that some are in "not so good" condition but all do have their pans. Were you to offer him some cash and foot the shipping charges, I think he might pull those bolts for you (maybe an entire set!).

I tried recently to purchase allen headed stainless steel bolts to use in My pan
but no one has 7mm bolts....
they are rare as...
actually all My 1968 pan bolts are actually phillips head screws...
I did lose three in the grass but luckily I found two, and I have a spare gearbox
along with the one in My car and the replacement gearbox I have ready to install...
I agree with Sean on the longer bolt... very special that one...
its in the center and holds the adjuster ring in the gearbox....
In the Photo - See the phillips head screw on the Left hand side...
and the Large adjuster below it...

I have found the screws in one of My transmissions are actually hexagon headed bolts... still 7mm...
Why in the world anyone would use a special size bolt/screw on a production part ?? it would have been a lot cheaper to use 6 or 8mm screws bolts which are readily available...
