Title: Acceleration issues???
Post by: bugtastic on 19 November 2013, 01:57
Hi all.  Now that I got the transmission figured out I thought I'd tackle the next issue.

I'm attempting to cure an issue with my engine.  It starts up fine.  Idles nicely.  However when I go to push the gas pedal it wants to die until I let up.  If I hold it the engine will die.   Almost like it's being either starved or flooded.  If I feather the throttle I can get it to accelerate at a pretty good clip when I drive it.  Almost like the gas pedal has a sweet spot.   I've had an issue since I picked up the car with a luke warm exhaust on the passenger side.  The driver side is hotter.  Not sure what this means.  Anyway, I've got a H30/31 pict carb and a vw distributor.  Not sure if either are original.  There's a pic of the distributor.  I took apart the carb and cleaned it awhile back.  My dad mentioned maybe an accelerator pump problem too.

I just put new bosch wires on it and the plugs are new NGK that came with the car.  The timing appears set correctly and the points are newer and the gaps are set.  Any ideas?

bugtastic,
That distributor is for a 1968 1500 SP donk. The carb is a replacement for the original. I would check the Acc pump too and give the whole thing the once over.

Post up a pic of your engine bay and we can see how you are set up.

But definitely find out what donk you have in there. That distributor needs to be timed differently...I am *ass*u*me* ing it is all as VW intended back in '68...otherwise we will be crawling on hands and knees to sort out exactly where and how your donk has to be timed.

Must be the original distributor then or at least a match.  I have a 1500 SP in there.  I'm a 68 autostick.

Here's a pic of the bay.  I've made some minor tweaks.  Added the pipping from the shroud.  Still need to get an air cleaner though.
