Title: Autostick does not move.
Post by: caio@vintagehunters.com on 18 December 2017, 22:44
Hi Guys,
I'm new in the forum and wanted to have an opinion on a 1972 Karmann Ghia autostick.
I removed the engine and gearbox for a full cosmetic restoration on the engine bay. As I've removed the drive train I've changed the clutch as well as the throwout bearing.
I also checked the lever points and did a full maintenance on it.
Ok everything is assembled and in place. I put the car in gear(it goes smooth) but the car does not move...as it is in neutral.
I've searched the forum and did not see any person with the exact same problem. Any tips where the problem could be?
Thank you in advance.
Best regards,
Caio Stinchi

Caio,
Replacing the clutch plate & TO bearing means you had to separate the trans & TC from the engine, all the ATF hoses/pipes & VAC stuff from everywhere. A lot of places to start looking. ATF OIL level & sheer quantity, hose placements etc.

I'll have a dwell over what may be the issues you are facing. I assume it isn't coughing ATF over your driveway/garage?

I wouldn't say my gear engagement was ever smooth, more of a "jump" into gear.
Perhaps verifying that your diaphragm is actually functioning is a place to begin.
More details on what is moving, not moving, klunking, wheezing or even a short video would help to pinpoint a direction.
Best Gary

Did You replace all the vacuum hoses with new ones. If the original cotton covered hoses are still there they can all be leaking as You cannot see any of the holes/cracks in the hoses. Make sure the control valve is clicking when You move the gear lever backwards or forwards with the ignition on.... run a wire direct from the bottom of the gearshifter to the control valve in the engine bay. Power from the ignition is on one terminal of the solenoid and the ground wire from the gear shifter goes to the other.  Do You have a Bentley [VW of USA] workshop manual ??  You will need one to do what You have done successfully.  These are a complicated car if You haven't worked on them before.   That is why the majority of VW mechanics will not work on them.... all the original VW trained mechanics have all retired or passed away...
Make sure the clutch arm moves when you operate the gearshifter [ign on] - You laying under the LHS of the car...  hand brake on...
do you have a new small vacuum hose to the carburetor to the control valve?? You can use normal vacuum hose for this....
I used truck/trailer air brakes hose for the large vacuum hoses....
