Is it possible to 'fabricate' an automatic transmission for an super beetle? my husband seems to think there should be a way I am also wondering, I am very interested in a '71 super beetle auto stick here but I've heard that they can be hard to find parts for. Is this true? I can't drive a stick so I'm hoping I could manage an auto-stick
For the first question - yes, with fab skills, you can go full automatic. What you need is a full automatic transmission from a Type 3 VW. This will bolt directly to the Beetle motor. The trick is fabricating supports for it, and, getting the shifter linkage done.
For your second question - yes, SOME parts are hard/impossible to come by. Personally, I took the easy route - I bought up all the parts that were reasonably priced until I had two full sets of everything. So far, I've used one part, given away tons of them to those in need, and still have a decent pile.
vdubnewbie,
SERIOUS fabrication skills required. It makes a manual conversion look like a walk in the park.
On STF and Aussieveedubbers (you'll need to register to see the pics) a guy called nbturbo has done this. Fully Auto Type 3 gearbox into a beetle.
EDIT :
I see he's joined and posted some pictures already in the pictures forum!!! Ask him or email directly about how much work it was!!
END EDIT
And like Cobey I've hoarded parts. www.thesamba.com classifieds section has lot's of autostick stuff for sale.

My other trick is Craig's List. I know where I can get an whole AS setup for ~$100 if I want to drive 3 minutes. :D
Hi,
I've spoken to two people who have installed type 3 fully auto transmissions into a beetle...
One said it was Very difficult..
the other said it was easy...
I think it depends on what You can do with fabrication and cutting etc...
so it would be very difficult... no I'd say impossible for Me to do...
as My Son does all My welding etc...
and there are some people who love oxy cutting and welding etc...
