i thought it would be cool to do a virtual test drive type of thing for my website i was building.
a 71 karmann ghia auto stick. just after adjusting the shifter properly and a newer battery. still a few kinks to work out but damn this thing is a blast to drive. notice the hiccup on the first right run? what is that all about?

Hiya df,
Dunno what the hiccup was.
But I love this kind of video. Really neat of you to take us along on a test drive.
Thanks!
Hi df
You really need to adjust the clutch servo
thats why its hard to go into gear or grinding the gears...
check My website to see what I did
to adjust mine... or Mike or Sean can tell You...
You are very close with the clutch servo, just needs a very small adjustment
Now i want a movie camera so i can be a star... ;D ;D :D
thanks for the test drive...
cheers

Hi again.,
When you turned the engine OFF
there was a funny [odd] noise
Does anyone know what it was??
What year Karmann Ghia?
Engine sounds great...
accelerates great too...
Scared Me a bit driving on the wrong side of the Road...
until I noticed you were sitting in the passenger seat.. ;D ;D ;D :D
cheers

haha that noise was i guess the vacuum block? i forgot the name of it. letting off excess pressure? im not really sure! its always done this. you can even hear it on this one http://s4.photobucket.com/albums/y150/danfrommi/karmann%20ghia/?action=view¤t=IMAG0044.flv
as for adjusting the servo its not grinding into gear. i just missed it that one time a gear and droped back into 1st ;D at the beginning of the drive i was testing the shifter.haha still learning to drive it. what exactly do you mean by adjusting the servo?
Above the LHS rear axle is a round black thing
its connected to the clutch arm...
the connection is adjustable.
there is a locking nut You undo then turn the adjuster
I'll have to look at My website to see which way to turn it..
You would only turn it maybe 1/2 a turn at a time
when you can shift into reverse without grinding
do the locknut back up...
The Vacuum tank should hold its vacuum forever....
without starting the engine
You should be able to turn the key on
and shift about 6 times before the servo stops working...
so, You may not have enough vacuum...
but these cars are complicated, so You need to know that all the vacuum hoses
are new and not leaking.... and there is enough Automatic transmission fluid in the ATF tank on the RHS
of the engine... between the two marks on the end of the dipstick
the ATF should be a red color... if its brown it needs replacing...
another thing that needs adjusting from time to time
is the points in the bottom of the gearlever...
Mine needs adjusting now as when i go to go into reverse
after I push the gear knob down the switch in the bottom
doesn't work and I have to move the gear knob about for it to work
and i can get reverse....
Funnily, My Wife can get it into reverse every time.... ;D :o :o
so, I must be doing it wrong??
Apart from all that...
Your cars sounds great and goes great...
Do You only use Drive 1 and drive 2 ??
If You use Low gear to take off, they really accelerate...
cheers

go thru one of My websites until You find a photo of the clutch servo
and I should have explained how I adjusted the servo adjuster... Lee
im not having any problem or grinding at all shifting into any gear? where do you hear it? at the beginning that was me testing the newly calibrated points in the shift lever to see where the servo would engage at. i dont know if you remember me but you guys are the ones that helped me rebuild the transmission when we first bought the ghia. i first posted over at thesamba but brought the questions over to here since this forum is more about auto sticks. everything you guys told me to do when i did it correctly worked perfectly. the only real problem i have now is a few electrical bugs in the lights and that damn contact in the shifter want to keep turning so its not pointing forward and back. and keeps coming loose. i didn't really tighten it down really hard last time and its been sitting every since. until when spring comes around at least !!!!! one more month! yeah! its currently -18 C (for you metrics) and cant work on cars out in the open period unless you want to loose a couple fingers ;D
::edit:: heres the original posts about the whole process we went through http://www.vwar.org/forum/index.php?topic=19.0
Well df You're an old hand then....
Take all the fuses out and disconnect the battery then wire brush or file all the contacts were the fuses go
also do the ends of the fuses if they are dull looking..
You also need to clean the other end of the copper pieces under the bonnet where all the wires go onto the fuse box..
You need to this one terminal at a time so you don't get mixed up...
Also when You take a fuse out push the two copper comtacts [with the holes in them] slightly towards eqach other
this gives more bite for the fuses...
When a fuse blows slowly, the copper pieces lose their tension...
I'm going to either replace My fuse box with a modern push in blade fuses
or use circuit breakers.... as One of my fuses comes loose evry now and then and i just turn the fuse round
and the problem disappears... but thats no good for My wife....??
cheers df
