Does anyone have a new or good condition Ashtray/Shift Pattern Cover for a 1970 Autostick? or... know where I can get one? All the shift patterns I see are for the regular bug and not the autostick.
HELP!
Thanks,
Shaggy
Hiya Shaggy,
They are around.
I've seen them at local boneyards, but if you do not have VW oriented salvage yard in your area you might have to go this route........

or this route............

Hi,
that is an ashtray for the later autosticks with the park feature..
something I've never seen in Australia..
A fellow in Australia had a batch of these made up a few years ago..
but they had the park feature so no one in Australia wanted them..
I did see Him on ebay a while later...
Another Australian VW owner had some of these made up also a few years ago
I don't know if he has any more...
All the other autostick owners I know about bought one from Him...
best of Luck

Samba does have a few of the ashtrays for the auto stick that do not have the park on them you just have to search through all the pictures and find them. I only found about 3 that didnt have it and only on samba have I found them so far. Good luck.
Hiya All,
I think that Shaggy may have made his move already.
The Samba ad I linked him to now shows that a transaction is in progress. Did you buy it Shaggy?
And for what it might be worth................ the ashtray diagram was actually molded into the pebblegrain finish of the vinyl covering. That makes it difficult (actually impossible) for a sticker to be "correct". Although the sticker would (or might) look pretty good on an ashtray with a metal covering.
Yes... I have purchased one from the classifieds... THANKS so much guys. Ya'll have been a HUGE help.
I don't think that there are any VW autosticks with the padded dash in Australia..
I believe they were only on 1976 beetles [Non Super]
and many 1976 VW owners over here take the padding off as they like the painted dash look...
so they are fairly rare over here...
Best of luck with the round Nut.. it would have to be pressed in I should think,,,??

You guys have any suggestions on how to bring back the color on an ashtray? The paint is gone but you can see the indent where the shift pattern is suppose to be. I was thinking a paint pen or just white paint and a thin brush, any better ideas on this?
I don't know what happened to the decal on the ashtrays...
they are very rare over here.... manual;s and autos..
best to see if anyone over there ever had them made....
but then you need to take the old one off....??
and then paint the ashtray....
cheers
Lee
Hiya Stephanie,
Actually, this was discussed somewhat on the old forum.
As I recall, there was no definitive method for getting the job done. I remember that one suggestion was to use a toothpick for a "paint brush". And another idea was to fray the end of the toothpick so that it would act more like a mini-brush. Whatever.
I would suggest that you take your ashtray on down to your local hobby shop. These guys know all about painting in small and cramped spaces - think: painting all those little figures for an HO train layout. I'm thinking that they will have ideas or equipment which will make the job easier.
Thanks Mike, I will do that. Who knows, I might be able to snag a small brush from dad, he used to have some model trains. I'll get it done and post a pic when its finished and you guys can see it.
After reading this thread I went out and took a look at my ash tray. It doesn't have a shift pattern on it. But I do have the shift pattern sticker on the dash board behind the steering wheel.
Anyone know if this is factory or after market?
Dave
Hiya Dave,
The answer is a little complicated, but I think we can tell you it's genuine.
You see, in 1973 VW was scrambling to hold on to its market share. For VW that meant a lot of individualizing each car to make it special (and sell!). I checked with Garwood and this is what I found regarding the ashtray shift pattern in the 1973 model year. Automatic Stickshift Custom models (starting with VIN 1132412811) received a new ashtray cover that included the park position in the shift pattern. On the other hand, Automatic Stickshift equipped Super Beetles received a new shift pattern dash plaque which also included the new park position. In another entry Garwood even gives a VW part number for the AS plaque, 133 000 269A. So, it looks as if the decal (plaque?) in your Super is the real deal.
It would be nice to see a picture of it.
Thanks for the info Mike. I'm out of town right now, but I'll post a picture when I get back.
It looks original and I saw another 73 on ebay with the same set up.
Dave
Something else i didn't know..
I've only ever heard of one 1973 1303 Beetle autostick in Australia..
so I've never seen that sticker...
