Title: Aftermarket Exhaust
Post by: Herbie on 25 June 2007, 23:59
Does anyone know of an aftermarket exhaust that will work on an AutoStick?  I'm looking for a Monza type that only has two pipes that utilize the stock apron cutouts.  Help?

Hiya Herb,

What is the problem with a stock exhaust?  It definitely will fit the stock apron cutouts.

Is this a matter of, "I want it to sound better" or "I want it to go faster"?

Sort of a generic answer here..........most any exhaust that will fit a manual transmission equipped Bug will fit and AS equipped Bug.  You may need to pay some attention to the ATF tubing from the oil pump, but I doubt that will hang up the project.  The big problem with aftermarket exhausts (and aftermarket "stock" exhausts for that matter) is that they don't fit up with the exhaust and heater tube outlets on the engine all that well.  One really has to use some care in getting a new exhaust to fit the old engine.  There have been more than just a few posts in forums about the difficulties of making a new exhaust mate up.

Herbie,
I gather you're looking at something like the AC Industries/TRI-MIL  (or EMPI) Euro 2 tip? Something to consider is that if you have a close look at most extractors/exhaust systems is they have marginal pre-heat arrangements. Your stock exhaust force feeds from one side at the head connection and feeds it into the muffler assembly on the other side via some pipe work. The better quality/thought out systems keep this arrangement, the rest do not.

As Mike as pointed out, lots of discussion on other boards, even about the TRI-MIL specifically.

A summation of the end results?

The TRI-MIL is a well made, affoordable system (except for the point I mentioned above) but people say it booms or is loud inside the car.

EMPI Monza's (4 tip looking ones) have a bad rep (quality etc).

The VW Mexico exhaust is another option to consider.

I had seriously considered importing the TRI-MIL, but with a stock car and everything else I didn't bother. Got a perfectly good ERNST stock muffler with taper tips (just HAD to do something) and everything fits and works beautifully.
