Hi Folks
Well, I drove about 450kms on Friday, up the coast the Largest VW gathering in Australia {IMHO}
My beetle purred all the way without any problems..
until I arrived at My destination, and went to reverse into My parking spot..
it didn't want to go into reverse...
so I had to push it in with loud protests... crunching...
other gears were fine...
I crawled under the car early next morning and adjusted the clutch servo arm slightly
it didn't look like it had moved as the nut was tight and the paint
was perfect... lol
anyway, that didn't make any difference.
it just got worse and worse
the other gears still working fine... all weekend..
Today, Monday, I set out to drive the 450kms back home
about 300kms closer to home when I was in traffic in large towns
I started having problems, No crunching , but didn't want to go into Low gear
and finally about 430kms closer to home
I even had problems , no crunching, but it didn't want to go into Drive 1...
so Now its in My carport in My back yard...
What do you think is Wrong ???
I'll check all the hoses tomorrow & the ATF level
but I'm thinking Maybe a leaking Servo??
or control valve??? Wild Guesses...
Lee
Well,
its freezing cold and raining
so I haven't touched My car as yet...
No one wants to guess what it is??
LEE
Hiya Lee,
Hmmm.........sounds a little peculiar.
If the problem were your servo or control valve I'd expect that you'd be getting crunching and grinding when you attempted to shift into any gear.
Here's a thought...........might it be possible that your shift linkage is askew? I had some problems with grinding and found that the thru screw in the shift coupler had bent. Inasmuch as Low and Reverse are both on the same side of the shift pattern, that might be a possibility.
Well Mike...
I just pushed the car backwards and degreased underneath it
and hosed it off...
I then started the engine and it DID Crunch in every gear...
It wouldn't go into Low Drive 1 and I had to crunch it into Drive 2..
its too cold again now
I'm going to do an oil change and do the tappets and check everything out..
there was a bit of oil under the engine and rear of the gearbox..
it all seemed to be engine oil...
but wondering about the gearbox oil level??
ATF is OK...
LEE
It turned out to be the clutch servo adjuster was loose
as i touched it - it came apart.....
so it wasn't tight...
Just adjusting it now...
LEE
You wouldn't believe it
I drove My beetle down to do some shopping
and parked nose in to the store...
when i came out... CRUNCH.. each time i tried reverse...
Well I jacked My beetle up today and the adjuster was nice and tight
locknut still done up... How could this be???
It looks like My gearshifter points need adjusting..
When I push the lever down and forwards
it seems the clutch servo isn't being activated... at all...
I have come to this conclusion , as if I tilt the top of the gearlever
and shift into reverse... no problems...
I think when i adjusted the shifter points a month ago
I may have left the lock nut loose...
as i tend to do....
I've finally found out thats why they put locknuts on things.. ;D ;D :o ;D
cheers
LEE
