I have a 1973 volkswagen superbeetle with the autostick transmission i was wondering how i would go about changing from that big black aircleaner to a smaller one i was told it needs that black box for the vac. actuated cluch. I have no idea.

You can safely change the stock oil bath air filter to one of those shiny chrome jobs without affecting the performance of the transmission. Some of the folks who frequent this forum have done just that.
However, do be aware of two important considerations. An aftermarket air filter will do no better a job (in fact many will not do as good a job) than the original oil bath. And the oil bath filter has a velocity stack built into it so changing to an aftermarket "chromy" may actually adversely affect your performance to a degree.
