Title: Sounds like a duck...
Post by: raynkel on 13 August 2008, 14:35
When I shut my VW down I hear a sound that the best I can describe is a duck. I am assuming it is vacuum related to the shifting mechanism. Any one else have this?

Something to be concerned about/prepared for?

Hiya Ray,

Sounds like a duck?  As in "quack"?

Hmmm......If by shutting down you mean turning the key to "off" and engaging the parking brake, I'm guessing that the sound must be associated with the parking brake.

On the other hand, if you are turning the key, setting the brake, and putting the car into gear that sound could be a vacuum escape from the vacuum reservoir.

Car is in low, brake set, then key turned off.  Quackkkk.

I should try to record it, it's hilarious...

Hi,
i think mine makes the same sound.
And yes sounds like a duck with an fever, or like big frogg.
Guess its something with the vacuum yes, it makes this sound as long as i know(i drive him for 7 years now),
always thinking(and still think it)  it was normal.

I usually leave Mine in gear and turn the engine off so no noise..

After turning the engine OFF
there is enough vacuum in the tank
for about 6+ changes....    so 6+ quacks... lol

As long as it's not a sign of something failing. It does make people take a quick look :)

Mine did make a noise for 3 years
I only recently fixed the problem
too much vacuum on the small hose
which made the servo work Very quickly..

the noise was much louder in the car than outside..
and it was louder originally...
but i put the small pipe from another carburetor inside the hose..
and this small pipe had a pin hole in one end...
so it did quieten the noise a bit..
as it was noticeable outside the car...
it was probably the air being pushed out of the servo..

Now this pipe is in its correct place in My carburetor
No noise...

Only duck noises if i have a Duck CD on...  lol
