Title: Fuel Pumps
Post by: Brandon on 22 August 2008, 05:17
One of the problems with my bug when I first got it was a very leaky fuel pump. I replaced it with a new one from CIP1, and it worked fine for about 2 months. Then, yesterday, my car died in an intersection (well, it does that often, but this was a real death, wouldnt restart). Took it to a VW mechanic and he said that the pump had basically come apart inside. Is there something I did (not enough grease, wrong gasket, ANYTHING), that would make this my fault, or do I have any recourse here. Its a 1600CC 1974 DP Motor, so I  used the pump with the 4" pushrod (the one with the tilted over looking top).

Hiya Brandon,

Sounds like you used the "alternator" fuel pump which would be correct for your 74.

I really can't imagine that one could botch up a fuel pump installation (it's pretty straightforward) except for one thing..............mating up the correct fuel pump and fuel pump pushrod.  That's the only thing I can think of that would have serious consequences of the nature of your experience.

Brandon,
You are supposed to pack the cavity with high temp grease. I'll dig up where that recommendation was. I know I did it on mine but it is too early to tell whether mine will blow up regardless.
This still won't cure the ever declining and variable quality of pumps on offer today.
Notably, circlips are no longer used on the ends of the pivot shaft and I'd question the longevity of the shafts anyway as most pumps seem to come from Brazil. I'd suggest that if your Brosol manufactured alt style pumps are not lasting then grab an electric Facet (or Carter low psi) and plumb/wire it in. I'm assuming you don't/can't go beserk looking for a NOS or better manufactured one. I think Effbe (Italy) make the best qual pumps nowadays but don't know if they supply Alt style.

Wow..

not good...

I have a black plastic electric fuel pump under My fuel tank [which I can switch off]

and you can buy the plate that fits over the hole where the fuel pump went

cheers

Whats the original PSI? on the stock carbie and 1600 dual port motor? Does high pressure just mess everything up?

Hi
I have read where the fuel pump pressure on a stndard VW Pump can vary
from 2 PSI to 8 psi..

the thickness of the bakelite plate varies in thickness
and the pump actuactor shaft also varies in length..

I did end up with problems with flooding of My carburator
so I fitted an adjustable fuel pressure valve and then still
had problems after a while as I still didn't know the pressure
so I added a gauge [fuel pressure] and now I keep the pressure
around 2 PSI...  no higher..

PS I bought all these on ebay..  lol
