In my fun going overboard when i was takign the motor out i took out the bolts that hold the oil sump onto the transmission, Now this wasnt an issue (actually quite hillarious bloody oil pissing everywhere).
Anyway back to the issue at hand, how the hell do i refill it and how do i know when its full? I read through the books i have and they sort of show it but i couldnt see anythign about oil. I suppose i also need to knwo what oil????

Hiya Marc,
So you removed the square shaped pan on the bottom of the tranny?
Oh, I'd imagine that would be an adventure with the ATF. By the ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid) is what you need. Dexron (or any of its successors, Dexron 1, Dexron 2, etc) is the stuff to look for.
Just for your information and to be perfectly clear........your transaxle actually uses two different types of "oil". The ATF we've already mentioned is strictly present to drive the torque converter only. Its purpose is not to lubricate anything - just act a drive fluid - kinda like a hydraulic fluid.
The differential portion of your transaxle is lubricated with straight 90w gear oil, same as a manual tranny. You can access the filler hole via the 17mm allen plug on the left side of the transaxle. It's the blue plug in the following picture.....

If the gear oil level is at the bottom of that hole (stick your finger in to check) you are good to go. Capacities are 3.6 litres -ATF and 3.0 litres of gear oil.
By the way, Sean (Volkenstein) has a great method for flushing out your old ATF and replacing with new stuff. You won't find this method anywhere else except here at VWAR. Ask him about it some time.

Perfect just what i needed to know :D
Eraser,
It's on page 4 of this Tech section at the moment, way down the bottom. Depending on what you can get a hold of in South Oz, Castrol VMX or Castrol LSX90 for the trans itself, any Dexron grade for the ATF. Ring Mick Motors in Qld and see if they have a pan gasket in stock, or the usual suspects if they don't.
Regards
Sean
Hi
I never used a new gasket.. the old one was always OK
plus i used form a gasket too... no leaks..
I would recommend NON synthetic transmission oil .. [I used syntrax ]
Castrol 75-85 HYPOID oil [the smelly oil]
I have found the synthetic stuff, besides being very expensive
wants to leak thru every bolt hole/stud etc...
although nothing from the pan gasket 113 198 031
Don't forget to renew the flexplate "O" ring..
cheers and best of luck..
Lee
Hi
Here is the o ring on or in the flexplate..
I just took the old one to a bearing shop
and bought a couple of them..
cheers
