I bought a 1971 super beetle with AS several months ago. It had a 34 pict /4, it had 3 vacum connections. 2 for dist, and one for the CV- all separate. My mechanic swapped out the carb recently and replaced with a 34 pict, however it had one less port. The dist ( dual) is hooked up correctly, however the VC is now "Tee'd" off the vacum advance. So the vacum advance hose now supplies the dist and CV. She appears to shift smooth and runs ok. However I have noticed that while in #1 gear, under load or acceleration she will pop out of first. I then either push back into 1 or 2 and it stays. Any connection between the hookup and popping out of gear?
I've been reading your site since I got the car several months ago. Should I drill out the other site and add a port. Alsoif I may impose another question. Any place where I can buy a new/rebuilt correct carb and a control valve. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Well, I'm going to assume that there was something fundamentally wrong with the 34PICT4. Most 34PICT3s (both new Bocars and old Solexes) do not have that all important AS vacuum port. This is the first time I've heard of teeing off the vacuum to the distributor. I would advise that you give serious consideration to drilling the carb for the correct vacuum port.

Probably not. Has this popping out of gear only occured since the carburetor/vacuum changes?

I think this is the way to go. It's not at all difficult and it mimics the original design of the system.

For your carburetor needs please see kiefernet over at The Samba. He is absolutely top notch for carburetor rebuilds and rebushing. You want to ask him for an AutoStick specific Solex 34PICT3. I do all of my carburetor rebushing through him and the last time I talked to him he idicated that he may have some AS specific carburetor bodies he can rebuild for you.
As to control valves.....a question. What makes you think you might need a control valve? These things are pretty close to indestructible. Even the ones sitting in the mud in the boneyard are usually very clean inside. But if you do find yourself in the market, stay away from anything with a guarantee (it's not possible to rebuild these units anymore despite what some folks will have you believe) and stay away from anything over $50. It's strictly a used market (although once in a great while an NOS control valve will pop up) and the best place to go shopping is over at The Samba classifieds.

Post up pictures of your car and its problem areas. You can never tell what we might be able to spot by just looking at a picture.
Hi Rick,
yes You will have to drill out the other port
so the control valve will have the correct vacuum
Jumping OUT of Drive 1 or Low gear shouldn't be related to Your Control Valve..
it will normally be a Gearbox/transaxle thing...
Maybe Sean will be able to answer that one..
it could happen if the base of the gear shifter is bent or in the incorrect position
and it just pops out of gear as it isn't selected correctly...
the bent piece ould be inside the gearshifter base...
the reverse lockout plate...
I have seen pics of them broken...
but in normal circumstances , it shouldn't happen.. this is Hoping all it is...
also, check the gearshift rod to gearbox connection
under the oval plate under the rear seat...
if this has worn or come loose..
otherwise its inside Your gearbox/transaxle..
best of luck

PS: See what the other guys think..
there has been a reply while i'm typing... lol
Hi Mike,
as MIke says, You most probably do NOT need another control valve...
but the tee piece has to go.... lol
I have heard of this before...
and Your Mechanic doesn't know anything about Autosticks by the sound of it..
its best to do whatever you can Yourself...
especially renewing all the vacuum hoses..
You can see a color diagram of how the system works
on My website
cheers
