Title: restoring a windshield
Post by: 007kilmer on 31 August 2008, 22:56
I am restoring a 71' Ghia and it needs a new windshield and a new driver side window. Modern glass that is made has a 7% tint on windows, is there a way that i can just get normal glass as the originals?

Hiya 007,

The side window without tint you may be able to obtain from a boneyard.

The windshield is going to be a heckuva lot more problematical.  While windshields are seen in boneyards they are usually worn out.  If aftermarket tint is all that is available, then you may not have any options.

If I were you I'd contact the House of Ghia (http://www.house-of-ghia.com/) and check out your possibilities there.  I'm sure they will have a line on this sort of thing and there's no need to reinvent the wheel.

thats interesting about the tint...
do you mean the top of the windscreen /windshield is tinted?

they are in Australia too..
Mine has it - but i'm not sure whether thats all are available??
but side glass isn't tinted..

I replaced My windshield as it still had an original shatter type toughened glass windshield
which are now illegal in Australia...  so i have a couple of shatter types on My garage roof...  lol

You should be able to find a side glass from a car dismantler...
You may have to look at a few to find one without scratches..

cheers
