Title: just a little electrical help on a 71 ghia please :)
Post by: dfrommi on 20 July 2007, 19:11
okay got the engine in and trans wired up starter and the solenoid @ the starter all wired up. gave it a quick test to see it it turned over. i thought the old pictures i had of the engine bay would be good enough to rewire it but its kinda fuzzy when you zoom in and a lot of stuff is in the way. just to make sure i have the generator wired correctly heres a pic http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y150/danfrommi/karmann%20ghia/IMAG0072.jpg?t=1184950968

now for the bad part. heres a pic of wires coming from the drivers side firewall consisting of a blue/white,brown/white,black and a white one on the same female connection, a black and i think either a white or a light brownish one.http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y150/danfrommi/karmann%20ghia/IMAG0073.jpg?t=1184951048 i been looking at the bently electrical manual but my mind draws a blank with most of it. please help! i know there will be more wire and questions

Hiya df,

Your first picture of the generator wiring looks OK to me.  Although I'm not familiar with the black lead on the red/white post, I'm guessing that it is part of your on-board diagnostic system.

Your second picture is something else again.  I'm pretty sure that the tan wire (with a sleeve) is a hookup for your control valve solenoid.  Is your voltage regulator back there also?  That could be where the blue/white line is supposed to go.  Do also know that any brown lead will be a ground.  Truthfully, it's pretty hard to tell just by looking at the ends of the wires.  One really needs to be able to trace them back just a bit.

dfrommi,
Look at the Aug '71 -> (Section O in the Bentley). That diagram matches your colours better and with Mike, I'd call more than a few of those for the diagnostic port. Black wires in a VW are power feed wires, so careful with that thick one. I'd grab a test light, a spare battery (or use a continuity tester as well) and track back to / forward from the fuse box.

To help out a little with the diags, How many fuses on the fuse box? 10 or 12?

With a 10 fuse, power goes to the CV solenoid from the coil, with a 12 it's fed directly from the fuse box.

bookwus that tan wire came from the drivers side . the tan wire for the CV came from the passenger side along with another black wire with the same cluster of wires. picture here http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y150/danfrommi/karmann%20ghia/IMAG0074.jpg?t=1185018819
black wires as power feeds?! geez thats totally opposite of what i know about wiring.usually in USA black is ground and the lighter colors are power.i think that bigger white with black wire on the same female connection goes to the ignition coil.after hooking it up i sprayed a little starting fluid into the carb and cranked it over a few times and it fired up. the person that put the accelerator cable through the firewall messed up and put it OVER the clutch arm instead of under it and when the engine went in it pulled its self right back out. now im looking for the darn hole that it goes into. and its reallllly hard for me to get my hands anywhere in that area. ill probably be searching for pictures of that today

Hiya df,

As I mentioned in my last post, figuring out where the leads go by picture only can be something of a tricky business.  One really needs to be able to trace them back to a source to be sure.  Then too, your KG is a little different than a Bug in some respects as to the layout of the electricals.  That it makes it a bit tougher for us Bug types.

In any event, I'm glad to hear that you got her fired up.
