I just read on a site, "QRZ Forum" That if you remove the crankcase return hose from the air cleaner you'll get 5-6 more mpg. This sounds like bull. Anybody know? ???

I dunno that I'd take that piece of information as gospel. In the old days the crankcase fumes in Detroit Iron had to run through the PCV (Positive Crankcase Vent (or Valve)). When that PCV got dirty it could, indeed affect the mileage and performance. But VW never (to my knowledge) used a PCV in their breather hose assembly.

Yeah, mine is just a piece of hose from the crankcase to the air cleaner.

Hi

what would they be talking about VW crankcases on QRZ.com??

On the early beetle engines including Mine - 1968 - there was a hose going from the oil breather
[where you put the oil in] to the oil bath air filter plus a pipe going under the engine...

so the crankcase oil could go either way... and the oil [if any] under the engine onto the ground..

I've been running just one hose from the oil breather to under the car.. for a couple of months..

I really don't think You would gain any MPG from disconnecting either of the hoses...
