Title: Pics of a 34PICT AS carb
Post by: LA Irish on 31 January 2009, 00:10
Does anyone have pics of a 34PICT with the correct locations of all the vaccum ports marked for their functions?

This is mine before the rebuild. Also do a search of this site. There is a nice step by step on altering the carb for an autostick.

Center front, you'll see two brass nipples. The one on the right is the one that attaches to the control valve. The one on the left attaches to the air filter (paper filter type).

Mike is that your condenser outside the Distributor?
the little Capacitor looking thing
I have 68 and trying to time it TDC since I disco'd everything to replace my fan and gen timing aint been the same since IDK if its stock or what the engine ran sweet before I messed up the Gen by leaving a rag in the engine compartment (which the fan sucked up and fryed my gen by seizing the fan I ended up replacing gen and fan and I may need to replace the thermostat controlled arm that opens the vents once engine warmed up anyway to tell ?
Anyway from looking at your pic of engine compartment I noticed different distributor I did recall the Bentlys manual stating at about 70 year the added centrifugal force to distributors IDK proper terms yet sorry

'68,
The small can next to the fuel pump is the condenser. They are somewhat specific depending on what coil/distributor/voltage the car is running.

First things first...Mike's distributor is an aftermarket SVDA by www.aircooled.net . And they are great units.

For yours, there are Bosch and Vw numbers on the lower part of the distributor body facing the fuel pump. You need to find them, write them down and visit http://www.oldvolkshome.com/ignition.htm . This distributor page lists just about everything to do with the various types of VW distributors in the US market.

Lowly manuals were fitted with Vac only distributors, since we (Autosticks) were the pick of the litter ( ;D) we got mechanical & vacuum advance distributors from the start.

Depending on what is fitted, YOU MUST TIME THE ENGINE TO THE DISTRIBUTOR TYPE!

Very important, hence the loudness. No point trying to time a 009 at 5*ATDC when the correct method is set it @ 30* BTDC whilst keeping the engine rev's to around 3000 r.p.m.

Thermostat? Have a look at it. It should look like a small cylindrical accordion, witha 1/4" gap to the top of the bracket. You could possibly have done nasty things to the thermo & flaps assembly as a whole. I think it would be wise to take the shroud and lower tinware off to see what has happened in there by having sucked that rag in and seizing the gennie.

Now I forgot to look up the distributor numbers or even write em down BRB,
I did, however pull the tinware off and inspect the Thermostat and found it vanished, the treaded stud is there where the thermostat looks like it would be but no thermo /boggle do they have a tendency of vanishing? LOL
Guess it being a California car it either got taken off or never put on when I got the rebuild done IDK as for taking off the shroud I lifted is high enuff to inspect the flaps all fairly straight up and down wide open so no dmg done there luckily was only about a $80 brain fart
"WARNING" when striping paint off bug be sure to remove all rags and foreign objects from inside engine compartment before starting engine, that fans a vacuum and will eat anything not tied down~!
Shesa sucker! lol.
Peace,
Joe.
PS my distributor does in fact have a condenser mounted outside it it was hiding in the back so couldn't see it.

'68,
Common practice for them to go walkies. So long as the flaps are wired or held open the donk should survive. Scrounge as many junkyards for salvageable bits as you can. Some things in the entire assembly are NLA new and you'll only get them from a wreck.

You're condenser hiding around the back should make it easier to read the numbers.

Been there and done that, luckily with only a strip of cloth that had dropped down!
