Title: non park autostick swap for one with park
Post by: 74soup on 03 April 2009, 19:24
does anyone know if a non park autostick will easily swap in for one with park? are they the same box just different internals? is their anything that needs to be adapted?

'74,
Not easily. You have to change over the front (front of car) trans mount with either a weld-in mount or maybe an adapter mount. Rears - easier. Just get the mounts and "bow" section off any pre '73 manual one or brand new if you want. By the time you've gone the lash for all that gear all you could have a second hand '74 trans.

Hmmm...look at this : http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=681984

If you're keen....it's definitely a late model, just not sure how late (Bastard '73 or late '73/74 onwards) though....

Just change the nosecone. That's all. And on the inside, change the shiftplate on the shifter. I've read The Bentlley shop manual, and the "Park" feature can be refitted onto the older AutoStick transmissions. The problem with that is the parts are hard (if not impossible) to find.
