Title: My Beetle is off the road for a couple of weeks...
Post by: 68autobug on 16 June 2009, 17:45

My Beetle is off the road for a while, as I replace the inlet manifold
with one that has non blocked heat riser pipes..
I also found My muffler has split around where the pipe goes into the muffler itself..
its a shame there isn't more metal in VW mufflers...
this one was made in Denmark...

I am also mounting a new oil cooler over the top of the fan behind the shroud.
so I'll be taking the fan shroud out too...
which can be fun... ??? ??? ???

WEll taking the fan shroud wasn't too difficult although it took Me nearly an hour
to undo the flaps bar and spring - the little clips being the hardest..
I have an electronic ignition box mounted on the LHS of the fan shroud and
oil hoses go from Left to Right..

One of the external oil cooler hose fittings was leaking..
not sure whether I put any sealant on the thread??
Yes there was sealant on the threads, but I must'nt have tightened them enough..
I.m going to try & test the oil pressure tomorrow before the fan shroud is fitted..

I hope its warmer tomorrow so I can take the hose fittings off and check for sealant..
I'll probably paint a few things while I have it apart...lol

same colors...  red  yellow  black  green.. silver...

Hi Clint
I just hope the sun is shining....
so the tools and My hands are both warm...lol

I've sprayed the engine and fan housing with degreaser and hosed all the oil off..
it seems the very small leak was spraying into the fan housing and then sprayed everywhere by the fan...

while I have the fan shroud out I should really add a thermostat and spin on oil filter adaptor
to the oil lines...

just replacing the oil cooler to behind the fan shroud would be very easy....
adding the other two items.... a bit more difficult...

it was very foggy this morning...
and cold too.... but a long way from -1C that will come back in the future...

cheers

Title: Re: My Beetle is off the road for a couple of weeks... New Oil Cooler mod.
Post by: 68autobug on 30 June 2009, 15:57

Well, the weather has been really good most days..
with the sun shining thru the clouds...
so I'm now waiting for a new muffler to fit My GENIE Extractors My Son gave Me.
I'm fitting the new oil cooler at the rear of the fan housing..
I've downgraded the size of fittings and hose to 10mm 3/8 inch..

I do have to have some mods done to My Extractors so they will connect to My heater pipe flanges.

cheers

Well My new thunderbird quiet muffler arrived.
it won't fit under My rear valance, so I've cut some of it away
and the muffler still needs to be pointed down to the RHS , so it doesn't hit the RHS fender.
I also had to move My ATF feed pipe and hose
so it wouldn't be touching the muffler...

I remember now..lol .. that I was going to get the flange turned around and the muffler coming out the LHS
so it wouldn't be near the ATF tank etc...
but too late now... lol

I hope to be back on the road by the weekend...

PS: as its 3C degrees outside, I'm not working on it after sundown..lol..

Sounds like a lot of work Lee. What's the advantage?

HI
it started out My heat riser pipes that heat up the inlet manifold rusted out
and stopped working... I used an electric blanket wrapped around it last winter
but I have another inlet manifold and My Son welded a vacuum pipe on it...

I thought I'd change over the inlet manifold before it gets too cold..
also wanted to change my doghouse oil cooler which was sitting next to the RHS tappet cover.

I found My muffler was split and leaking [again]
I took it to My Son to weld up and He had a few new extractors hanging on His wall
so He gave Me one.. with no muffler..

I also had a new oil cooler that I was going to fit behind the fan housing over the fan

so, I ended up with a lot of things to do...

and the sun is still shining for a few hours most days..

its 1C degree at the moment 1am so the cold weather is here...

cheers

LEE

PS: I've also added new spark plug leads and plugs and replaced the vacuum hoses.
next is a SVDA Dizzy..

Well,
My Son welded the flange onto the Muffler so it would bolt to My engine...
I used the old gaskets and hi temp silicon everywhere...
I went for a 40 KMH drive the other day, going was OK...
but soon, the extractors were leaking badly on the top LHS heat riser...
and My engine kept cutting out, I would pull off the highway, and the engine would be idling
great???  so away I went again... same thing happened...
the tacho just drops when the power is cutoff to the engine...
I connected the coil direct to the alternator, thinking this may fix the problem...

but it made no difference...
eventually, I got up to 110 KMH and sat there until I got to My town.. [no problems at 110kmh]
but speed limit is 100KMH locally... on highway..

This cutting out has been happening for a long time...

I should have taken My electronic ignition box off when I had the fan shroud off...
I'll keep looking...
I have changed coils, and no difference...

I have My tacho connected to my coil [as per normal]
but My electronic ignition did have a seperate wire for the tacho???
I'll have to read the instructions again..
