I have searched and found a posting that suggests one buy 6 feet of 12mm braided vacuum hose. I am guessing the 12mm is the inside diameter of the hose, and the 6 feet replaces all the larger vacuum hoses. In my autostick Ghia, I see 3 different diameter braided vacuum hoses. Two go to 2 vacuum cans on the dizzy, and one slightly smaller braided hose goes from the back of the carb to the control valve.
Does anyone know the proper sizes to order for these two smaller hoses? Does Belmetric have them?
Thank you for putting up with another hose question.
Hiya auto,
You hit paydirt!
Today is hose day around my place. A group buy order was delivered today and I'm sorting out about 15 meters of RH12W, the reinforced hosing.
A little background and context for you. BelMetric wants to sell this hosing in units of 5 meters. That's because they buy it in lengths of 5 meters. They will (or may) cut into a roll of 5 meters, but they really don't want to do that. That's what prompted our group buy. RH12W is the stuff (it's wire reinforced - don't use anything that is not wire reinforced) to use for intake manifold to control valve, control valve to vacuum tank, and control valve to clutch servo. You are correct in that the "12" describes the inside diameter.
If you buy from BelMetric you will get a bit more than six feet. That's because they sell by the meter. You actually will need a little less than 5 feet but since that is more than 1 meter you'll have to order 2 meters and have some left over as a souvenir.
The small vacuum hose from the carburetor to the control valve is 3.5 mm regular (not reinforced) braided hose that is fuel resistant. This can be picked up at any VW oriented Flaps or online vendors. I use the same 3.5 mm hose for the vacuum connections to the distributor although, technically speaking, that is not a correct application. 3mm (IIRC) plain rubber vacuum tubing is available for this application. Again, this is a FLAPS or online vendor item.
Hi,
Two hoses to the vacuum can on the distibutor? DVDA type? The rear (rear of car) one is 3.5mm braided cloth stuff, hopefully hanging off your looped vac advance pipe. The front one is green X 4.5mm hose up to your carb vacuum retard port.
I bought mine from EVWPARTS IIRC. I think Wolfsburg West sell it & maybe even Belmetric..
Measure all your existing lengths of 12mm hose. KG's run things differently than beetles.

Thank you all for your replies. Now I have a better handle on what I need to buy. By the way, my KG does not have any metal vacuum pipes or high looped hose. When I replace my hoses, I shall make the small vacuum hose loop higher than the carb port.
Since my car has 2 vacuum cans on the dizzy, do i need to run both dizzy vacuum lines with a high loop?
Auto,
Debatable as to even running two to an DVDA. Pull off the retard hose, cap that carb port and then re-time it to 7.5* BTDC, advance hose off and capped and you have an erstwhile SVDA. If you choose to keep both then time it 5*ATDC, hoses ON.
IMHO you do not need a high loop in the retard (green) hose. I say that because the actual vacuum is drawn from the carb base and then travels upward to the retard port. It's only "active" when the throttle plate is closed. I can't see how fuel would drain down to the vac canister.
Happy to be proved wrong ;D .

Whoa! Good thing you caught that Sean. I forgot about the KG.
I am sorry for being a dumb SOB but none of my hoses are green. I had a SVDA on my 71 Squareback and it only had one dizzy hose and that car ran great. My Ghia runs well too but I have no problem removing the retard hose. I am only guessing which one it is.
My guess is that the hose that is not easily visible on the dizzy is the retard hose. Am I correct?
Hiya auto,
If properly hooked up, the hose delivering the advance vacuum "signal" will be connected to the vacuum port on the left side of the carburetor as you look in the engine compartment from the rear. The hose for the retard vacuum "signal" will be hooked to one of the vacuum ports extending from the rear of the carburetor. It should be hooked up to the vacuum port at the 10:00 position relative to the blow-out plug on the rear of the carburetor.
Does that help you?
Thanks Book, That was an excellent description, I now have it figured out. Thank you for all your help.
Auto,
Sorry about typing two hoses to an SVDA, when I meant DVDA...fixed it now!
