Title: Having my wires crossed...
Post by: Chris the Eagle on 10 July 2009, 15:22
So, I couldnt sleep last night and I decided to start going through my wiring harness and replace the needed bits.  I also wanted to make the wires nice and neat, basically so I can find things...

So I took out all of the wiring intact from the dash except for the fuse box.  I took all of it inside and I started working on piecing new wires together.  I pull out my trusty manual to find out parts are missing...  The emergency flasher switch for example was not on the diagram from the blue Bentley book.  There were about 5 wires coming out of it and it wasnt even on the diagram!!  I have a color version of this diagram and the wires that did belong to the switch went elsewhere.

Using the VIN helper at thesamba, I determined that my VW was produced in early August 1968.  My wiring harness only matched the diagram from August 1969 thru 1971...  My VW had an early H5 engine, but the wiring harness of a later model?????

Any way, I think I can fix it, just wanted to throw this out there.  Very Strange...

Hiya Chris,

It would help to know just what flasher relay you have in that wiring.

A true 68 would have the so called 9 pin flasher relay and a 2 pin emergency flasher switch.  This was replaced as production advanced into the 69 model year.  At the same time the wiring was changed out to reflect the change in relays among other improvements.

So, later 69s will have the wiring loom that incorporates the 4 pin flasher relay and the 7 pin emergency flasher switch.

That was the other thing, my flasher relay had 4 pins and my emergency switch had, I think, 9 pins.  They were not all used, could this be a case of a PO changing some stuff?  It could have been 7 pins on the switch, but I do believe there were more.

Hiya Chris,

Well, the key here is that a 4 pin flasher relay require a different wiring harness than does a 9 pin flasher.  Same situation for the emergency flasher/switch.

That you have a 4 pin flasher relay would tend to indicate (along with the differences you have already spotted) that, indeed, you do have a later wiring harness.  Would it be possible that a PO might have rewired the car at some point in its past?

It is possible.  I am unsure of about 25 years of the car's life.  Another thing I found is the rear defroster switch was not wired up either.  Alot of things were disconnected or missing.  Fun fun...  anyway thanks for the info Bookwus.  One of my degrees is in drafting and design, so I am planning on creating a full wiring diagram for my VW including AS wiring.  I may need some help with it.  When I get finished, I will post it for all to see.  thanks

Chris,
Hang out on the electricals forum at www.shoptalkforums.com for some tips & friendly advice. Lots
of wiring gurus there and lots of schematics of custom harnesses.

Search on a post by "achilles" on this site. He did some work on re-popping the trans wiring harness.
