Title: Mid-engine Autostick?
Post by: Dyngo on 10 July 2009, 22:00
Does anyone know if it is possible to use an AS in a mid-engine configuration?  I am thinking about buying a kit car that is set up that way and would like to try and put an AS in it so my girlfriend would also be able to drive it.  Is there specific years that may have this capability?  I already have a complete AS engine out of a 74 Ghia but the guy had already sold the Tranny and all of its components.  Thank you for your time.

Hiya dyn,

There should be nothing inherently impossible in doing a mid-engine mount with an AS transaxle.  If you can rig up the shifting linkage for a manual mid-engine, then you should be able to do the same with an AutoStick.  You will be looking at some creative plumbing though.

I was thinking I should be able to make some 914 linkage work from an early tail shifter.  As far as plumbing goes I have access to a hose shop at work.

You may have to "flip the diff" in the tranny. Now as far as using a mid-engine linkage, I don't know if the stock AutoStick shifter will work with the linkage (since it is the only shifter that will work with the AutoStick).
