Hi all, my Grandad has given me his AS SB that he brought off his brother in 1980 that he got in 72.
Been tinkering with it for the bout the last month, think i'm getting hooked.
Got full tune done by local aircooled specialist; adjust valves, points, plugs, cap, rotor, set timing, adjusted carb.
Everything seemed to be sweet apart from low compression, tappets way out and a few oil leaks.
It runs through the gears fairly smooth, slight clunk when selecting from idle, but I think that could be due to the original vacuum
hoses. It tends to stall in gear when cold 2.
Was told to get new front callipers because they were sticking. So would it be best to for fork out for new callipers?
or could it just be that the hoses are blocked. Bug hasn't done much driving in the last 10 yrs.
Been reading lots of forums and have found this 1 the most useful.

Hiya James,
Good to have you aboard!
Priority number one (and it will always be priority number one!) is to make sure your brakes are perfect. If you have money to spend on this car, spend it on brakes. As my very first employer always said, "It's one thing to get a car moving, it's another thing entirely, and a helluva lot more important, to get it stopped".
Don't make the assumption that just one component is causing the problem with the brakes. Examine everything VERY closely. For example, the rubber flex hoses to the wheels often fail in such a manner as to be undetectable. They look perfectly normal on the outside but swell up and close off on the inside diameter. Be VERY picky about your brakes. Look at everything.
Also, if the car has been sitting for a while.............replace all your rubber fuel lines. Every single one of them! And make sure you use clamps on them.
Also James..............post up some good pictures of your engine compartment and let us all take a look at how you have hoses and wiring hooked up.
Finally, enjoying yourself on the beach? Take a look at the Member Map thread.
heres a pic
Congrats on the new ride! And a 1302 at that. I really like the old windscreen with the new struts. Have fun with it, just don't forget that this is 37 year old car that needs some TLC. If you forget that, this will quickly go from fun to frustrating.

Hiya James,
A stocker! And a nice looking one at that.
You have some leaking going on around the base of the carburetor. Ever smell a little gassy after you run it? Not a big problem but it is one that you'll want to attend to before very long. I like that you have no fuel filter in the engine compartment. Smart! I do hope you have one elsewhere though.
Do this................with thumb and forefinger try to squeeze the 12 mm vacuum hose that connects the intake manifold with the control valve. You should not be able to squeeze it - it should be wire reinforced. If you can squeeze it it needs to be replaced. That goes for all 12 mm vacuum hosing from the control valve.
Your small vacuum hose connection from the carburetor to the control valve is correct. Excellent! You may want to try tweaking the control valve adjust screw to see if you can moderate that shifting "jerk" you might be experiencing right now.
Looking good James.
Its had a good life, Grandad had old german mechanic that was trained by vw work on it for years.
Its also german assembled if means anything.
Cant squeeze any of the hoses, due to age shld they still be replaced?
Shld i be adjusting clockwise to slow down engagement?
All that brown stuff at the base of the carb seems to be some sort of preserving wax its all over the place, terminals n all.
Chers Hercdriver, dont worry its in good hands I like the old stuff..
moved the screw in half turn, it made the it smoother, just over 2 threads showing now.
