Title: Engine Compartment??
Post by: Rick on 27 July 2009, 17:46
It's a work in progress, but the transaxle (AS) I took out last week to have rebuilt and new clutch disc put in. Since I'm a little OCD, i have some quick simple questions: 1) Since I'm cleaning and painting the enbine compartment- I ordered  some new sound deadner back boards for the engine comaprtment ( 3 pieces) form Wolfsburg West. The old ones were disintegrated. I see on the engine firewall these pointy triangle metal pieces. There are about 8-9 of them. Do these pointy pieces go through the firewall barrier to fasten it up right? I also have the wire harness holders which I know fold around the harness. Second question- Next to the acccelerator tube exiting from the chasisis another small stubby tube with chalking stuck in it-is this the clutch cable tube? I remember my old VW's having a long clutch tube coming out from the chasis. The original ( 1971) transaxle and CV joints look a little cruddy but worked fine. Do you recommend changing over the CV's on the transaxles-or just grease them up. Thanks for all your expert help guys!!

Hi Rick

I replaced the tar boards on my AS Ghia, mine has small metal tabs round the edges to hold it in place, these are prone to breaking off, its important that the boards are secured Ive heard of incidents where old tar boards have been sucked into the fan housing causing overheating. Good luck with it.

Hiya Air,

Absolutely true.  I know of one fellow who screws in a big fender washer to hold the tarboard to the firewall just in front of the fan intake for that very purpose.  The Bugs have a bunch of very sharp little tabs which are designed to penetrate the tarboard (as you mount the tarboard in place) and then be bent back to hold it in place.  In addition to that I also added some weatherstrip adhesive to the front of my tarboard when I installed it.  Seems to be holding place quite well.

Hey Airhead,  Wow what an engine compartment. Drooling here.   I see you have the fuel filter in the engine compartment(not my cup of tea) and it has clamps on it(good).  Do you have the clamp at the carb safety wired to the far carb top screw?  The fuel inlet nipple in the carb top has a nasty habit of falling out of the carb body when extra weight is placed on them from the filter.  It is an easy fix for added insurance. It happened first hand to me so it isn't just an old wives tale!  I was extremely lucky and no harm was done.  Beautiful job on the car.  Oh yeah, lets see the rest of it!

That engine looks like it just left the factory...
excellent...
I know how hard it is to keep everything painted and unscratched....

CV Joints... these are very tough and a refill with lithium based Moly grease
they will last a long time...  unless there are bad wear marks or pits in the CVs..
I've had them making a noise and the lithium based Moly grease stopped the noise too...

what model is that?
I don't know much about Karmann Ghias as very few were sold in Australia...
and probably none were autosticks.. most were 1959-1960 models..

it looks early to Me... but the engine bay looks later??

Hi Lee

Its a '71 though does look earlier, I changed the front indicators for the early ones when I did the resto, and the dash is painted, the '71 model has a plastic wood grain veneer that I didnt like, everything else is as it should be for a '71, it originally came from California I have all the receipts from when it was new though it was originally red, I quite fancy a bug next Ive got my eye on one locally thats been sitting in a neighbours driveway for years it lookds like an original Jeans beetle but needs lots of work.

Cheers
