Title: Clutch servo bladder replacement ??
Post by: SpyCarHippie on 19 October 2009, 19:44
Another dumb question from the Hippie...

I'm pretty sure the bladder in my servo is leaking. I can still shift but reverse is iffy and I'm at full adjustment at the adjuster. (All new hoses by the way.) I did the test of pulling the arm, putting my thumb over the hose spigot and the arm slowly returns.

So here's the dumb question...

... Can the servo be repaired on the car or does it need to be removed? It looks like it will be a bear to get to the screws to remove it but the assembly looks quite simple.

Thanks in advance for helping a Noob'.

Dave

PS... Lee... If I do have to remove it, what color should I paint it? ;D

Dave,
Do yourself a favour and remove it. Hose 'n' clamp, one cotter pin and push the connector pin out and three nuts on the bracket is all you need to remove it. Just be careful of the spacers and washers when you undo the three barcket-to-servo nuts.

I reckon "Rocket Red" for some flouro day-glo colour so you can spot it really easily ;D .

Yeah. I figured that was gonna be the answer. Isn't there a nut or screw above the servo? That's the one that appears difficult to get to.

I like red or maybe sky blue so i don't feel so claustrophobic while adjusting.

Thanks,

Hi Dave...
well I just painted mine black ....
it looks good with the chromed clamp..
Now You have me thinking..
I could always change the color..  lol

at the moment, My favorite color is Pink...  Yellow is always a favorite for small items..
and Green is Good...  there's also blue...

I also have two spare clutch servos..
I could paint these first..

but If black doesn't work for you... [or your servo]  ;D ;D ;D ;D
then I'd suggest a brighter color may help

the servo is very easy to take off as I've had Mine off many times..
[as usual]  I really like to get to know my VW parts.. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

cheers Dave

Dave,
A 10mm spanner should take of that. If you pop the pin out of the clutch arm/servo connection (cotter pin out etc) it'll be a little easier. Far easier than scrabbling around the nuts for the servo bracket to bellhousing.

As you can see from my little spiel in D.I.Y. I did mine black on the outside, inside with Rustbullet.

Hi Sean
I've had My servo and bracket [with spacers ] off many many times..
I have found it easier to connect the servo adjuster with the servo off...

First time laying under the car and doing it may be difficult..

I think the heat exchangers make it harder...
I think I even took the LHS heat exchanger off a couple of times...
something I hate to do... [is touch the exhaust system] lol

cheers

Update

I replaced the bladder last weekend. It went well. The hardest part for me was putting the new clamp on and getting the 2 halves lined up. I had to adjust a few times after I got it back on the car but now all is well.

Thanks for all the help. I don't think I'd be at all happy with this car without you guys. I am no longer regretting the purchase of the strange little Spy Car. As a matter of fact I think it's a blast to drive now that it's working right...

...at least I think it is...

...I honestly have nothing to compare it to. The rev's should drop when I'm stopped in gear as compared to stopped in neutral. Right?

Thanks Again,

Dave

Dave,
Yep, you're right. Normal behaviour. That's why the idle speed for an A-S is typically higher than a manuals. It shouldn't stall out BTW when stopped in gear....

Hi
Great to see you haven't given up on Your Karmann

most of the problems aren't difficult once You know what to look for..
but to a mechanic... even a VW mechanic who doesn't know how they work...
its a complicated mystery... lol... and most don't want to learn about them..
at least that's the case in Australia...

better to replace all the hoses... etc...
which then makes it much easier to find any problems...

I have two spare Clutch servos plus a new kit [still in the USA]
so I haven't actually done what you just did...lol

I always adjust My engine so it doesn't stall when in gear
even when its cold... and i don't have a choke connected... lol

so, My wife can now drive it with confidence....

after being on the road for 4 years, My beetle is now going better than it
ever has.... and fuel economy is now great also....

Enjoy Your Karmann "spy car"

cheers
