Hi, (tx for accepting me to this forum, thats my first post ;))
I was wondering how to replace my 1971 auto stick transmission oil (which I don't think was ever replaced)
I looked for the drain plug but couldn't locate any. :-\
Any tips and tricks please?

Fill plug should be on the left, part way up.
I suspected that myself I have this square pan with few small bolts but couldn't tell ::).
beside that seal anything else I might require? is there a filter to replace?
I bought 3L of Castrol classic gear oil sae 90.
Is that a recommended one?

Page 67 has the fluid capacities, but just like a lot of transmissions, gear boxes, and differentials (when level of course), once it dribbles out the fill hole, it's full.
No filter to worry about. If it's never been changed just be sure to enjoy the aroma. It's delightful.

Earlier autosticks had a drain plug on the front bottom of the transmission, along with the larger square pan and gasket. Somehwere along the way VW redesigned the case to not have the drain plug and simply remove the drain pan to drain the fluid out.
Be sure you replace the pan (and gasket) before refilling the oil! ;D Also, that fill plug is a nightmare to get at due to it being partially blocked by the frame fork (at least on mine.) It's a 17mm SOCKET head if you haven't already noticed, so you have to use a 17mm allen wrench or similar to remove it. Get ready to fill up the swear jar
Just be sure to fill with the correct amount, as it slowly goes around the gears etc, sometimes it seems to be full, but isn't really... I'm lucky mine has a drain plug... To fill Mine I use a litre bottle [castrol] which has a long nozzle I can put in the filler hole and squeeze the bottle to get the oil in... The OIL Has to Be HYPOID SAE 30 ... Make Sure Your oil is HYPOID OIL... VERY IMPORTANT.... You will never forget the smell....

Tx you all for the information, I was in the dark for too long on that one, and I guess I have a lot to learn about this unique transmission and I realized its a rare car in Israel.

CORRECT -- YES SAE 90 --- HYPOID OIL - 90 is used in Australia but 80 or 85 would be OK in the cooler countries...

80w/90 is typical gear oil weight found nowadays and should be fine as long as it is GL4-- make SURE about that as there is some debate as to whether GL-5 is OK for our poor air cooled trannies!

So long as it is HYPOID OIL it should be OK..... I have a new bottle of GL5 HYPOID OIL and it says it will NOT damage gold metals like copper & Brass.... which is the problem We had with GL4 HYPOID OIL... It eats the brass bushes in the transaxle if it is stored for a time... VW has recommended that the HYPOID oil be drained if the car wasn't to be driven for months.... like storing for winter months.... I haven't checked if the oil in My transaxle is GL4 or GL5.... Hopefully it is GL5...

So Lee says GL-5 and others say GL-4 so I guess every man for himself. Most of the gear oil bottles I've seen at the store say GL4 AND GL-5 rated-- although I did see a bottle of 80W/90 at Autozone (can't remember which brand) that said it was GL-5 rated for differentials, not for the synchromesh transmissions. I guess read up and decide on your own

Well, I believe that the GL4 does damage your brass bushes inside the gearbox if the HYPOID oil is sitting for a few months...
IN one of My spare gearboxes, I have refilled with engine oil... the other one is empty....
and GL4 is THE original type of oil..... the DAMAGING HYPOID OIL......

GL-4 is what VW specifically recommended. That is a FACT. It can be argued that GL-5 didn't exist yet so that's the reason for the GL-4 recommendation however GL-5 is SPECIFICALLY KNOWN to cause damage to softer (brass) synchros and wear them much faster since it is an EP oil. Like I said every man for himself but you'll never convince me that GL-4-- what VW speficially called for-- is worse to use than GL-5.
Now what about the combined GL-4/ GL-5 rated oils? Who knows... but when I see a bottle on the shelf that states it's rated GL-4 for differential use but GL-5 for synchromesh manual transmission use I'll likely stay away from it.
VW IN THE USA .. Actually has a service bulletin that says if You keep Your Volkswagen in storage for the winter.... always refill the gearbox with NO EP Gearbox .. or even engine oil..?? while the car is NOT being Used....
