I just checked my timing using a light.  The notch on the pulley is way over to the left, by the fanbelt.
If I line it up with the engine mark,  the engine stalls.  Could it be a pulley from a different year engine?
Could the distributor be in cock-eyed? Otherwise,  car runs fine.

Hiya John,

It might help if we knew the serial number of the engine and what sort of distributor you are running.  Some engine distributor combinations (mostly SVDA type distributors) are set up so that one has to disconnect the vacuum and plug it in order to do the timing.

How many notches do you have on your pulley? I only have one notch on mine. If I line that up with the split in the case, that's TDC [top dead center]. When I use a timing light and set the timing 7.5 degrees BTDC [before top dead center] the notch is about 1/2" to the left of the split in the case. Hope that makes sense. It will be different if you have more notches on your pulley. Also, I have a 1600 with a 009 distributer. What are you running?

Hi, Bookwus & Eddie:  The engine sn is AK221649,  the distributor has no vacuum connection and has
some letters & numbers stamped on it thusly:  JF4   0231 178 009.  The car itself is a 1971 convert.
I posted a picture in the pic. section.  The V is where it's in time and the smaller mark is the notch.

First off, timing is ALWAYS done in accord with whatever distributor you have, regardless of the motor.  If the dizzy is changed to a non-stock model, you have to follow the timing of the new dizzy.

That being said, what you have is an 009 dizzy, which is not stock.  Here is a great link on how to time it properly (and get your timing marks figured out).

THANK YOU.  THAT IS A LOAD OFF MY MIND!
