Hello again forum.
I wanted to bounce off some ideas to see if I am on the right track.  So, here are the symptoms:

When I am stopped and in gear, i.e. holding brakes at the stoplight with the engine idle, I am getting a rumbling noise.  It seems to stop when I get moving again, and also doesn't present itself when in neutral.

So here is what I am thinking of, which will be checked, but if there are any other ideas or just more educated notions which correspond to mine.  I am wondering if my gear case oil might be a bit low.  The other idea I had is the torque converter.  Just wondering what all of your inputs might be.
What's buggin' you?

Do you have an electric fuel pump?

Trooper, I get the exact same noise. Don't know what to tell you. I've driven my car for long stretches though and never had an issue. I've changed all the fluids and such so I know it's all up to par.

Hi
Well. I had a rumbling noise today...
when I started My beetle to move it..  in neutral... rumble
I got out and found a pool of engine oil under the LHS Tappet cover..
so, I put a new gasket in... and forgot to listen to the engine..

the noise did disappear when I revved the engine????

I'll have to go and check it now...

Well I took a shim out of My alternator pulley

and tightened the alternator nut more than before

and no noise

Yes, I hope that is Your noise too...
either the belt was too loose causing the rattle
or the nut wasn't done up tight enough so allowing the shaft with belt and fan
moving slightly back & forth..??

It was a sigh of relief when I restarted and No noise... lol

cheers

Just wondering whether You found out what the noise was...?
seeing it doesn't happen in neutral... has Me worried it may be the torque converter..
but I honestly don't know..
I hope the flexplate hasn't come loose...
but I think it makes a rattling sound...
and a loose fan is very noisy when You turn the engine off...

cheers
