To start this out, I am an auto technician by trade and have quite a bit of experience with cars.  That said, this is my first air cooled VW.  I've been wanting one for quite some time and this little gem popped up at a good price.  I knew it had an issue with slamming into first and reverse, it feels like it's dumping the clutch.  The previous owners had it at a trans shop that said "the engine isn't producing enough vacuum to work the clutch" which I thought was ridiculous since the motor ran just fine.  They recommended that the car get the 1600 dual port engine and that would fix the problem.  I didn't think so.  After trolling this forum, I've picked up a little bit of knowledge but my service information has no vacuum diagrams so I would like some advice from the gurus.  I can tell you it is a 1974 type 1, 1600cc engine with a 34 pict 3 carb.  From there I am up to the mercy of you guys.
As I said, the symptom is it grinds/dumps into gear when starting out, shifts fine on the fly.

Hi
and welcome to VWAR...
Your car should already be a dual port engine.. lol
doesn't matter if its not..  mine isn't..
Can You show up a pic of Your carby and where the hose goes...
it sounds like the hose is going to an incorrect vacuum port.
only autostick carbies had the correct vacuum port..

there should be plenty of pics of incorrect and hopefully correct hose fittings on here.
many people have the same problem...
when non autostick mechanics touch the car..
even when they pull the carby off. they put the hoses on the wrong fittings...

I Have a weber carby and I drove My car like that for a few years...
the thumping used to make people in the local shopping carpark... LOOK... lol

it really means You have too much vacuum..  the clutch servo is really thumping..
[operating the clutch faster than You could by foot...]

I tried all sorts of ways to reduce the vacuum, without any success..
so, I fitted the hose to the correct low vacuum port...
and presto... works perfect...

Sean should be on here shortly, He knows all about these vacuum ports
I used a piece of pipe from a solex carby and glued it in place...
the pipe needs to go into the carby down low...
up too high and there is too much vacuum...
so, its a common problem caused by a carby replacement OR a PO or a Mechanic who knows nothing
and there aren't many that know how an autostick works...

cheers

My apologies, I thought I had put up pics.  I'll try and figure it out again when I get home from work this evening. Thanks.

bhenry

well, I put attachments of the pics of my carbs on my first post, otherwise I'm unsure as to how to get pics on here. The internet isn't exactly my strong suit.

Hi
I've sent You an email so You can send the photos to me and I'll post them on here for you.

here are a couple of pics from a bowling brad post showing where the port is located on His 34 PICT 3 solex carby
in His Karmann Ghia.
He drilled a 4mm hole not quite thru and a 2mm hole into the carburetor throat..
using 4mm brass pipe..
hopefully this will show You the correct position of where the pipe and hose goes.
re reading Your first post.. that is what My car used to do for a long time..
once You get the vacuum correct in that 3.5mm hose, You just adjust the control valve and gear shifter adjusters until it shifts like You want it too... fast or slow...

cheers

Lee,
Tsk, tsk  ;D. You'd better figure out your interweb thingy!! Now, Mr Henry..someone has slapped a manual car's carby on that. I can tell from the piccies. Go to the DIY section and you'll find a post by yours truly on how to modify a carb to suit an A-S. Grab about 60 inches ov 3.5mm ID vac hose while you are at it. You'll need that to run from your brand new spigot over to the CV. Do NOT forget to reset the CV adjuster screw to 2 1/2 threads visible.

Who knows watch butchery has been perpetrated.

Lee,
Nowhere. The manual carby fitted to Bhenry's car doesn't have the small hose. The engine piccie doesn't have an up close of the CV. But it is plain as day things aren't hooked up. Hmm..log in and look at his original post. Is there a paperclip up on the LHS? I just clicked that and the piccies appeared.

Pic on Photobucket..easy peasy to work. Click on the "IMG" part and it copies the photo. Just paste the copied link into your post and away you go...

Works for me and I am a Luddite at heart..

When I looked at the first post just now..
no photos or attachments are shown???

but Bryan did sent Me the photos by email Sean
He did say the pics were taken when He first got the car.
so He must have it hooked up now??

I tried last night to look at My info on here etc.. and every one came up as an error..
so I can't see what I have as defaults on here..
maybe I clicked the wrong one once???

cheers

LEE

Lee,

I didn't get your email.  That said, yesterday I modified the carby and adjusted the cv and now she shifts beautifully.  There are now 2 open vacuum ports that I plugged as I couldn't find anything that they should go to.  The car runs just a little rich but overall not bad.

By the way Sean, that write up on the carb mod was great.  I ended up using 3/16" for the large hole and then using a short piece of brake line as the vacuum nipple, then a 5/64" for the small.

Again thanks for all your help guys! Without it I think there would be a hole in the wall where I was hitting my head in frustration.
