1971 Auto-Stick issue

Hello  all - I have a 1973 Beetle with the "semi" automatic transmission that just wants to grind and not go in gear. I am not familiar with these units. Can someone give me a diagnostic route to take? Thank you.

I outlined the problems that can cause this and info about the correct vacuum hoses etc..
