73 beetle problems

i just recently bought a 73 standard beetle with an autostick trans.. now i love my beetle, but the transmission is not working correctly.. i have to start the car up while in gear and can shift while moving.. i can shift into reverse but only when i slam it in.. once in reverse i can shift to low gear fairly easily than once going i can get it into 1st or 2nd.. id like to fix this tranny since it is the original tranny to the car.. any help?

Sorry. haven\'t time to cover everything now..
but You can't start the car in Gear as its a US auto law  it had to be in neutral
and if You can't select reverse - it can be clutch servo adjustment - adjustment to the control valve plus
or to the bottom of the gear shifter points adjustments.
Firstly.. The     vacuum hoses all need to be new as the old cotton covered hose can start cracking at any time
