I've been working on my 1969 karman ghia for a while now, I finally got the car road ready, but within maybe a week and a half of having it on the road it was making really harsh grinding noises, now when ever I engage the car in low or 1st it won't go, I have to hit the gas and when I do that all I hear is grinding really loud grinding, I took the engine out and checked the torque converter, and it look like the torque converter was grinding with the top of bell housing on the transmission Iam completely lost don't know if its just the torque converter or transmission, I've checked your standard troubleshooting, but at this point open to any suggestions on what to do next.

Hi
Something I haven;t heard of before..
usually if You get grinding trying to go into gear, it is a clutch problem and You are trying to engage a gear without the clutch being operated.. or operated enough..
You can get into top gear usually because of the torque converter...
I have driven My car and really knocking it into gear because the clutch servo adjuster was loose and re adjusted the clutch.. lol   [on a 500 klm trip]
check the clutch lever isn't slipping [on top of the gearbox] on the shaft.. normally its very tight..   the clutch servo maybe leaking vacuum... a vacuum hose may be leaking..
lots of things but all point to the clutch not being depressed enough...
The torque converters don't normally give any trouble..
[depends of course on the previous owners and what they have done]
OR the control valve isn't operating the clutch servo because of an electrical problem..

after reading Your post again... You can get it into gear...
but it just makes harsh grinding noises???
but it does go when the gas pedal is pushed??
what about TOP gear [drive 2]  ??  and reverse??

check out the flexplate..  is it damaged??  bent twisted?? bolts were OK??
rivets aren't loose in the center hub??
You may have to drain the oil and look for any telltale metallic pieces in the oil...
from a bearing or brass bushing..

doesn't sound too good..
