55:

I will offer my 2 cents since my 68 AS had the same problem though not quite as severe. What you describe and what mine was is two symptoms of two different problems. They were:

     - Flat spot: This was simply a dirty carburator. Even though I had cleaned it by taking it apart and soaking it in Gunk carb cleaner for 24 hours I made one error. I did not completely disassemble it. I did it again by taking it completely apart including two small jets not found in the diagrams (be sure to take the plug off the float bowl and get the main jet out too). After another 24 hour soak and reassembly no more flat spot. Although my carb is a 30 PICT-2 and yours is newer I was surprised to find two small screws in the outside of the body that turned out to be jets once I unscrewed them. They were quite dirty. Neither is in any diagram I have ever seen in any manual. Yours may also have a coule of 'mystery jets' that are dirty.

     - Thump into gear (especially R and L): See the attached pics. This is the #2 diaphragm in the control valve. It was split as you can see. Additionally, it was stuck to the aluminum cone too. I delicately repaired the crack with yellow rubber cement and also coated the area around the crack on both sides. After drying I put it back together and it worked perfectly. My origional intent was an interim fix until I got a replacement. I got one a few months ago but have not installed it because the one with the repair is still working great.

Good Luck!

Tom

tmea, Yes I too believe it to be two different problems. I rebuilt the carb not to long along because of the stalling problem. If I remember right I did find and clean out all the jets and passages, doesn't mean I didn't miss something. It is probably worth a second look. I was trying to avoid taking the CV apart but may have to. I'm starting to think the intermitent thumping is being caused by it. I drew 20 inHg vac on the servo and let it sit, after 2 hours it was still holding. I would think that means its good. ghia, thanks found the info in the Bentley.
Thanks to All for the Help?

Vwman,    No worries.  Sorry you haven't gotten to the bottom of it yet but it will be worth it when it is fixed.  The AS is really fun to drive.  Keep us updated especialy when you discover the problem so the next guy wont search so long!
