Please help me with 2 issues. I have a leake of atf fluid under engine & can't see where it is coming from, any ideas.
The filler neck behind the right rear tire, has no dip stick to tell when fluid is low, just a cap on filler neck how do you know when there is enough atf fluid in there?
Thanks

Hiya A.D.

There are a variety of spots which can spring an ATF leak.  To get an idea of just where your leak actually is.........do this.........

Take a drive on down to your local Costco.  Ask one of the guys on the salesfloor if you can have a packing slip.  A packing slip is a large thinish cardboard sheet used between stacks of large paper items like toilet paper.  The guys at Costco use them to bundle their crushed recycled stuff, but they always have way more than they need - they're eager to get rid of 'em.

Take the packing slip home and place it under your car.  Should be easy to tell where the drip is from that.

Until you narrow it down a bit, know that leaks are usually most likely at connecting junctions.  The ATF hoses you see in your engine compartment both connect on the right hand side of the bellhousing - close to your starter.  That might be a place to start your search.

As to your measuring the ATF level................take a look at this.............

Another approach to finding a leak would be to thoroughly, and I do mean thoroughly clean the engine/trans.  Use a suitable degreaser, and a pressure washer (if available).  Be careful of the carb, generator, & distributor.  Once everything is clean and dry, drive the vehicle as you normally do, once the leak appears, it will be much easier to trace on a clean surface, as opposed to a greasy one.  Good luck, I hope this helps.

I degrease under My engine every few weeks to clean everything..
as I do have leaks, well not really leaks but seepage...
but I always have a piece of cardboard under the engine and gearbox..
You could try - degreaser under the engine - spray can foaming degreaser is best -
then hose it off after a minute or so..  when dry it will be very clean...
You can also degrease the concrete under the car too...

then start the engine - with a piece of cardboard or clean concrete
and look underneath to see if any bad leaks ..
as stated above -hose and pipe ends.. on bottom of ATF reservoir -
either side of the ATF pump - and any connections...
also the hose near the top of the ATF tank..
plus all hoses and the two fittings on the gearbox...

Strange about the cap with NO dipstick...

its a pain to even have a dipstick that long.... lol

best to check the gearbox oil too... thru the plug on the LHS of transmission..

cheers

If You drive around the block slowly and then park the car and look underneath to see any more leaks..
