GREAT Work Phil....

I can't say I've seen any better...
as Your work is Excellent...

I can see you like the early beetle look...
I like the late model look 1968>

but I really like the 1967 German model with large glass etc..
they weren't sold here either....  just the 1962 model made until 1967 model..

are You going to add the ATF temperature lamp to your speedo?
I have a metric KMH speedo which didn't have the ATF lamp light
so I carefully drilled and made one....

You are probably correct with the dashboard... origins...
I know the very early cars had wooden dashboards..

but what about "Running Boards" I have noticed by looking at old movies that when the beetle was finally
in production after the war....  Ordinary cars did NOT have running boards...  only beetles.
because their design goes back to the 1930s....  when running boards were the normal part of a car..

keep up the good work...

Mike: I saw on Fox News last night - heavy snowfalls and the snow plow truck spraying salt on the roads
they actually called it the SALT truck.....    I'm glad We don't have them over here....

cheers

Hiya Lee,

Oregon does not salt their roads but our neighbor to the north, Washington recently announced that they would salt their roads this year.

And.............we are now waiting for the next winter blow.  We are supposed to get a snowstorm tomorrow which will dump anywhere from 6 inches to a foot of snow in the area.  You know, a little snow around Christmas is very nice, very seasonal............but this is overkill!

And I'm wondering if Phil is going to give us classes in body repair.  Hey Phil, if not classes, how about advice?

Im glad you like it
I would like to fit the ATF lamp, i have a black faced speedo with ATF lamp
from the burnt out 69 auto bug but i dont think it would look right on an early bug
my old 68 auto stick had the early grey speedo with the lamp i wish i had swaped them over but that car was so original it would have spoilt it
may be some one out there might want to do a swap with me for grey MPH speedo ?
If not i might look for a standard grey speedo and risk fitting one i dont want to ruin the original one
Mike i can't remember if i told you but my splitty came from Beverton in Oregon and i did find an old parking ticket for washington in it, the guy that owned it was called byron he got it in the mid 80's its a long shot but i don't suppose you know him? i would love to know any history
on the bus he sounds like a real caricture he also had a school bus and kept goats thats all ive found out so far
I must thank Oregon for not salting the roads my splitty didn't need any welding underneath
and was still in the factory paint! over here it would have turned to dust without gallons of underseal painted on
good luck with the snow
all the best phil

Hi
My original speedo has the chromed ring around the center and its gray
and has lines around with the speeds.. in MPH..

I bought one on ebay in KMH... but it didn;'t have the fuel gauge in it
so its in My Sons 56 Beetle...

KMH Speedos usually fetch good prices over here...
even though many are imported from europe all the time...

I like to swap and mix things on My beetle...
as I did own early beetles years ago...
and always liked the latest that came out in beetles...

I also have a few non genuine things too...
I will be swapping My fusebox soon to be replaced by 2 or more New [plug in fuse] fuse boxes..

Have you ever pulled a beetle speedo apart phil???

PS: still funny weather here - 14C at the moment... was 38C a few days ago...
it looks like We may get a Cold Christmas mike... lol
Christmas time to Me means- 40C+ temperatures during the days and 30C overnight...
I usually take My dogs for a walk around midnight during DEC-JAN-FEB-
as its too hot - even after the sun goes down...
but at the moment I can still drive My beetle - especially at night ..
I even used the heater a few nights ago...lol

cheers

Hi Lee
yes thats the one the grey one with the chrome ring, but your right
the fuel gauge was in the speedo, so i will need an early type
speedo without the gauge as i have the separate fuel gauge
on the dash
I did repair my 68 speedo as the plastic cogs on the back were
worn and the needle would bounce all over the place so i took
the plastic cogs from another speedo and swaped them, it worked fine
but i havent had the glass off the front i suppose thats the way to
get in there ?

The bodies back on again with the engine and gear box in , all seems to fit well

This is were im hoping to fit the dual circuit brake fluid reservoir , i wonder will it work if
its not gravity fed?  or will it just pump through when the pedal is pumped ?

This is the layout, i have fitted the old rubber connecting pipes but is it made of some
thing special or can i use new standard rubber tubeing ?

The ground clearance is a little low approx 4.5 inches from sump to floor is this too low?

Excellent info...
and interesting to see how the Karmann factory modified the body and chassis....
I had never ever seen pics of that....

One of the locals has an Australian made 1965 body on a 1976 chassis...
He bought the 1976 beetle new... swapped chassis [2 years ago] and kept the early car....  lol

Not an autostick though....

type 3 Karmann Ghias were never sold here either although there are a few over here..

You see at least one at every VW show...

Your engine looks good too....

another local has a 1964 Australian made beetle , and He moved the gearlever. heater and handbrake...
I think it was to fit new seats..??

unless the chassis is a late one too..??

cheers

LEE
